The Effects of Whole Word Reading Program and Expressive Vocabulary of Persian - Speaking children with Down Syndrome

Objectives
Reading is a language skill based on visual modality which recently is addressed as a facilitator of expressive language in children with Down syndrome. The aim was designing a whole word reading protocol and examining its effects on the language skills of children with Down syndrome.
Methods
A whole word reading protocol was developed and was examined through a single- subject study with time-series design. The protocol was made up of 50 pictures of nouns which were used through assessment and treatment. The vocabulary stimuli were selected from the receptive lexicon of each child. Three children with Down syndrome (trisomy 21) participated in the study (3 Females, mean age=6. 1 years, mean IQ=44), and each participant received an individualized treatment up to 20 sessions. Visual graphs and C-statistic test were used for data analysis.
Results
As a result of the treatment, naming ability of treated words was increased statistically in all children (Z= 2.46>1.64; Z=1.75>1.6; and Z=2.37>1.64).
Discussion
Whole word reading protocol seems to be effective in improving expressive vocabulary in children with Down syndrome.

تاثیر آموزش خواندن بر میانگین طول گفته کودکان سخت شنوا

هدف
فقدان شنوایی، رشد زبان را دچار آسیب نموده و متعاقب آن مهارت های گفتاری و شناختی به کندی پیشرفت می کند. هدف از این مطالعه بررسی تاثیر آموزش خواندن بر بهبود بخشیدن به میانگین طول گفته کودکان سخت شنواست.
روش مطالعه
در مطالعه نیمه تجربی تک گروهی با پیش آزمون- پس آزمون، 6 کودک سخت شنوا با روش نمونه گیری دردسترس، از جامعه آماری کودکان سخت شنوای مراجعه کننده به مراکز آموزشی- درمانی گفتاردرمانی دانشگاه علوم پزشکی بابل، انتخاب شدند و طی مدت 6 ماه با فشردگی دو جلسه 45 دقیقه ای در هفته مورد آموزش خواندن به شیوه کل خوانی قرار گرفتند. میانگین طول گفته این کودکان به عنوان ملاکی از رشد زبانی قبل و پس از مداخله بدست آمد و تغییرات آن با کمک آزمون ناپارامتری ویلکاکسون بررسی گردید.
یافته ها
نتایج نشان دادکه میانگین طول گفته تمامی آزمودنی ها پس از آموزش افزایش یافت و این افزایش معنی دار به دست آمد (p=0.028).
بحث و نتیجه گیری
به نظر می رسد آموزش خواندن که زبانی دیداری است، بر افزایش میانگین طول گفته در کودکان سخت شنوا تاثیر دارد و می تواند برخی مشکلات زبانی حاصل از نقص شنوایی را در آن ها بهبود ببخشد. به عبارتی خواندن می تواند به عنوان راهکار درمانی برای آموزش زبان شفاهی به کودکان سخت شنوا مورد استفاده قرار گیرد.

Objective
Hearing impairment does have negative effects on language development, and leads to abnormal speech and cognitive skills formation. This study aimed at examining the effect of reading instruction on mean length of utterances an index of language development in hearing impaired children.
Materials and Methods
In this quasi-experimental study with pre-post test design, 6 hearing impaired children were recruited from educational speech therapy clinics of Babol University of Medical Sciences by convenience sampling method. They entered a whole word reading program twice a week for 6 months. Each session lasted 45 minutes. Mean length of utterance was calculated as per-post test. The data was analyzed by Wilcoxon signed- rank test.
Results
The findings revealed an improvement of mean length of utterance which was significant (P=0.028).
Conclusions
It seems that reading instruction as a visual language helps improve mean length of utterance in hearing impaired language and might resolve some of the language deficits due to their hearing impairment. In other words reading would be applied as a treatment strategy for improving expressive language of hearing impaired children.
