In the past several years, a type of comparative interpretation has emerged. Although it has some works in the history of interpretation, this type of interpretation relies on weak sources both in terms of interpretation products and the epistemology of interpretation. What seems to be reinforced in the first place, is the epistemological dimensions and the perceived and accepted scientific principles of this type of interpretation. To this end, the present article tries to prescribe and recommend the essential requisites of this interpretation type in two fields of quoting traditions and critique of the content. In terms of traditions, such indexes as necessity of determining the limitation of comparison, evidential quotation, the maximal report of the similarities and differences, and explaining the positions of contradiction and conformity can be suitable grounds for comparison of opinions. In terms of critique, what is important is to specify whether the judgment has been done according to the common principles of both sides or according to the principles of one side of the comparison. Similarly, such renowned tools as philology, syntax, and rhetoric should be used for the critique and also the method and the tools used in the process of critique should be specified to make the comparison more transparent.

From the viewpoints of the Muslims, the Prophet of Islam is Infallible and this view is rooted in the Qur’ānic teachings. Despite this, there are verses in this Revealed Scripture that apparently cast doubts on this view. One of these verses is the noble verse 43 of Sūrat al-Tawba. There are different viewpoints among the interpreters concerning the Exalted Allah’s forgiveness of the Prophet (S.A.W.), of which a total sum of five viewpoints are presented and examined in the present article. Then, by providing a socio-literary analysis of the noble verse based on the Revelation ambience, and while rejecting all five viewpoints, it is proved that Allah’s reprimand and forgiveness in this noble verse has by no means been related to the Apostle of Allah (S.A.W.) and at the same time it has not been concerned to the hypocrites, either; rather, it has been directed at a group of weak-in-the-faith Muslims who had made the Prophet’s permission to the hypocrites of Madīna for not participating in the battle of Tabūk a pretext for their own permissibility for shunning the battle. Also, it is proved that the Apostle of Allah’s (S.A.W.) permission to the hypocrites of Madīna to shun the battle has been a quite advisable measure and out of expediency and had been approved by the Almighty Allah. This impression of the noble verse completely conforms to the ḥadīth related from Imam al-Riḍā (A.S.), who viewed the verse in question in terms of “addressing someone while the real intention is to get across to a third person”, of course with a different analysis of this tradition.

The second verse of Sūrat al-Mā’ida, which has been revealed in relation to Ḥajj rulings, has ordered the Muslims to respect the pilgrims of the Sacred House of Allah and not only to avoid any aggression toward them but also to ally with one another for doing benevolence to them. However, the interpreters are divided over determining the evidence of the phrase āmmīn al-Bayt al-Ḥarām. Some have believed that these “pilgrims” are intended to be the Muslims, some have believed them to be Muslims and polytheists, and some have taken them as polytheists, who travel to Makka with the aim of pilgrimage or trade. Meanwhile, the latter group who have taken the above verse to be intended for the polytheists, have come up with internal and external evidences for proving their viewpoint after deliberation on other phrases of the noble verse and the occasions of Revelation; but they have disagreed concerning the abrogation or specification of this ruling with some verses of Sūrat al-Tawba or the retaining of the ruling for the permission of the polytheists’ entering the Sacred House. Similarly, after critically reviewing both viewpoints, this writing has first chosen the polytheists as the evidence of āmmīn al-Bayt al-Ḥarām and then, by criticizing the reasons for the abrogation or designation of this verse, has proceeded to emphasize the retaining of the permission of the non-belligerent polytheists’ entering the Sacred House.

There are complicated words in the Qur’ān, each one of which have been used in a different context. One of them is furqān. The earlier and later Muslim interpreters have tried to consider various meanings for them such as book, Torah, Gospel, and the distinction between truth and falsehood since they have taken for granted the Arabic origin of this word. However, contrary to the Muslim interpreters, the Western scientists do not believe in the Arabic origin of this word as they rely on comparative etymological methods of the Semitic languages; rather, they consider it to be originated from the Syriac “purqana” meaning salvation. By comparing the viewpoints of these two groups, the writer suggests a new root for furqān and believes that contrary to their view this word is a combination of “purqana” meaning salvation and the Syriac “purqadana” meaning “command”. In critically reviewing the claimant of the writer of the article, we have concluded that according to the context of some of the verses that concern the Revealed Books, an originally Arabic root and meaning of light can be maintained for it, and in respect to the context of other verses that concern the salvation of the people of Banī Isrā’īl and the victory of the Muslims over the Polytheists, a Semitic/Syriac root can be considered for it.

As a sub-structural scientific branch, terminology is common in all the sciences and is in charge of identifying and defining the technical terms of sciences in a systematic form. Like other sciences, interpretation has its own terms and vocabulary, whose definition is the most necessary step before utilizing them. Meanwhile, the term “principles of interpretation” has for some time been brought up in the Islamic sciences and particularly interpretation, and the interpreters and Qur’ān researchers have given various definitions for it from different perspectives. The present writing is intended to give a comprehensive and conclusive definition for this term through studying its previous definitions.

Fakhr Rāḍī is the first interpreter who has paid the most careful attention to the discourse about the consistency of the verses and has brought about a great development in the relation between the verses in terms of both quality and quantity. He defines relation in three levels. He considers the first level to be in the consistency among various sections of a verse; the second level in the consistency of the verses of a chapter (sūra), including the neighboring or non-neighboring verses; and the third level in the consistency among the verses of two or more chapters of the neighboring or non-neighboring verses. The present research has been done by library method and analysis and study of views brought up in Fakhr Rāḍī’s Tafsīr and by comparison with other interpretations. The conclusion is stating various “level studies” in Fakhr Rāḍī’s Tafsīr, proving its status in quantitative and qualitative development of the knowledge about the consistency of the verses, and employment of his viewpoints in this respect.

One of the obligations of Ḥajj from the point of view of the Shī‘a jurisprudence is ṭawāf al-nisā (second circumambulation after which one’s wife becomes lawful). To prove its obligatoriness, the Shī‘a jurists have invoked the noble verse, ﴾and circumambulate the Ancient House.﴿ (Q. 22: 29). In view of most Shī‘a interpreters, what is meant by circumambulate in this verse is exclusively ṭawāf al-nisā. However, the Sunnī jurists have other viewpoints. In this writing, first the evidences of the renowned Shī‘a interpretation are quoted and then, in order of priority, the interpretation of the verse to obligatory circumambulation that is the late Ardabīlī’s choice, and the interpretation of the verse to circumambulation in general, including the obligatory, are defended.
