The life of man essentially belongs to the spirit, which is a divine, immaterial, and immortal essence, and the origin of all the vital faculties of man such as meditation, contemplation, perception, will, speech, and action. What gradually disintegrates and turns to its origin, earth, after the separation of the spirit from the body is the material aspect of man, not the divine essence of him. The divine or immaterial aspect of man enters the path of returning to its Origin, Allah, from the very moment it is created in the material body, and begins to make its journey toward the Creator. The immaterial essence of man is sometimes referred to by the name of "soul" . Geisary is quoted by Sajjadi (1rrr) as saying: "The spirit of man is called soul when its control over the body is concerned." According to Allama Tabataba'i the spirit is sometimes referred to as "I" which is immaterial and indivisible. Therefore, the "I" of every man refers to his spirit or his soul, which is his substantial divine essence that has control over the body, and all the bodily organs are the instruments through which the orders of the "I" are put in practice. The limited control of the "I'"s will over the body is a sign indicating the absolute control of the Lord's Will over the whole universe. Thus, "he who knows himself verily knows the Lord". This is a linguistic translation of the Arabic text. The nature of "self• knowledge" as well as the way of its acquisition are discussed from a mystic point of view in this article.

Nonwithstanding the significance of selecting and commg Persian equivalents for foreign words and terms as well as establishment of several organizations for undertaking the job, there are few academic Persian works on this subject, insofar as no comprehensive study has been accomplished about the approved terms of the three academies established by now. Thus many of theoretical aspects and practical problems concerning the issue have not set forth yet. The present survey is aimed at conceptualized criticizing the principles and criteria of the third Persian Academy (Academy of Persian Language and Literature) for term-selection and a subtle analysis of morphological, semantic and pragmatic restrictions for acceptibility of its approved general terms. The approach taken in this survey is synchronic and intralingual. Synchronic means that we consider Persian language in its contemporary state, not over time; and by 'intralingual' we mean that in studying the approved terms, the main attention is paid to the structure of lexemes and sense relations between lingual units within the language system; so non-linguistic factors such as sociological and psychological restrictions for accepting new lexemes are rarely taken into account.

In this paper, we will deal with this issue whether, in principle, the interpretation of a text is possible or not. First, we will make a review of what has been reported concerning this issue. Then, based on new methods of interpreting texts and text analysis, a certain text will be analyzed and technically evaluated. The claim is that interpreting any particular text, taking into consideration the author's views, is relative and to text interpretation is to be considered a final one.

Hermeneutics has entered into a new field after the appearance of new notions offered by Hans-Georg Gadamer ( 1900 - 200 I ). Thus, we should have a look at the perspectives of the new hermeneutic notions suggested by Gadamer. This essay has two parts: First, we will discuss the etymology of the word 'hermeneutics', referring to its history and place of birth. Then, we will deal with its general trends, snrveying Gadamer's basic notions, such as hermeneutic question, the issue of the text and the problem of its uuderstanding.

This article examines the. strong version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis to see whether language truly determines thought. Since Idioms and proverbs represent culture, animal idioms and proverbs in both English and Persian were collected from authoritative dictionaries, and, native speakers were asked to determine the connotation of each one to see whether it is positive, negative or neutral. It was found that the differences between these two languages on the part of idioms and proverbs are negligible and it is a strong support for the weak version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis

To investigate the presence -of generation effect (GE) at sentence level, 144 bilinguals were selected as participants. They were examined at 3 levels of language proficiency, both unilingual and bilingual conditions. Recall and recognition tests of memory were used for measurement of the retained items. To measure the correlation between intelligence and GE, all the participants were tested regarding their intelligence. Analyzing the data, it was found that GE existed at the 3 levels of language proficiency, namely, advanced, high intermediate, and low intermediate levels. GE was evident at both unilingual and bilingual conditions while the degree of exhibition was higher at unilingual condition. The degree of second language (L2) knowledge did not change the degree of GE significantly. The recognition test manifested the GE more strongly than the test of recall, and finally correlation was found between intelligence and GE.

The ability to read is acknowledged to be the most stable and durable of the foreign language modalities. Learners may use productive skills, yet still be able to comprehend texts with some degree of proficiency. Reading, whether in second or foreign language context, involves the reader, the text, and the interaction between the reader and text (Bernhardt, 1991 ). The present study was aimed at exploring whether summarizing the text and making comprehension questions had any statistically significant impact on the improvement of Iranian EFL learners' reading comprehension ability or not and if they had, which one was more effective - summarizing or self-questioning. In order to arrive at a logical answer to the aforementioned problems 127 university students were chosen from a pool of 160 students majoring in English Language Translation in Islamic Azad University at Garmsar. Three homogenized groups of students, who were taking a Reading course, participated as the subjects in one control and two experimental groups. While the subjects in the experimental group of self-questioning were required to read the material and generate questions and the experimental group of summarizing were supposed to read the texts and write a summary, the subjects in the control group were asked to read the materials and use some other reading strategies. At the end of the term, a newly developed reliable test was administered to determine the influence of the treatments on the groups. The results signified that self-questioning did not have much impact on improvement of students' reading comprehension ability, while summarizing affected their reading comprehension ability. Therefore, it was concluded that using summarizing in teaching reading could have positive effects on reading comprehension ability of EFL learners.

For many years, man has thought of inventing a dream-machine that could remove the language barrier and produce the highest quality translations to mankind. As a result, for more than five decades people have tried to program computers to translate from one natural language to another, and the emphasis has always been on search for methods and theories for the achievement of perfect translation. Translators, on the other hand, have watched the development in the field carefully. Some of them believed that translation could not possibly be mechanized. Others feared that their profession would be taken over entirely by machines. (John Hutchins-200 I) However, the use of Machine Translation (MT) seems to be inevitable in the 21" century because of the need for rapid information exchange and competing in the globalized market-place. According to ALPAC's report in 1996 (Automated Language Processing Advisory Committee) "MT will be the glue that holds the global information society together." Therefore, it seems essential for everyone to become familiar with its concept.

General proficiency assessment remains to be a very demanding issue in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Despite the existence of a wide variety of accredited general English language tests, the majority of educational and vocational institutions still prefer to screen their applicants through the two widely known exams of TOEFL and particularly !ELTS (the International English Language Testing System) which is capable of evaluating the candidates' ability to perform different tasks via the four language skills. The present study aims at investigating the performance of a group of 500 Iranian Academic and General Training candidates who have sat for IELTS in Iran. The statistical analyses indicate that most unexpectedly Iranian EFL learners have their best performance in speaking and are particularly weak at listening, which happens to be the best predictor of their general language proficiency. Furthermore, it can be claimed that Academic applicants do not significantly perform better than General Training applicants.

The study reported in this paper aims to compare the comprehension of two groups of adult EFL Iranian students on a reading passage under two input conditions: linguistically modified input, characterized by both lexical and syntactic simplification, and interactionally modified input with no linguistic modifications but with opportunities for interaction with the teachers. The results of the study revealed that the students who were allowed to seek clarification by asking questions had comprehended the text better than the students who had read the simplified version of the text. The conclusions drawn from the findings of this study are threefold: they lend empirical support to Long's Interaction Hypothesis, recommend interactional approach to teaching reading, and promote the use of authentic reading materials. It is a widely accepted fact that in order to learn a language, one must receive the necessary data. In acquiring their first language, children receive a large quantity of L1 data from their parents and the surrounding environment. In learning a second language, the majority of the learners receive the L2 data from language classes. This data is provided to them through two main sources of input, i.e. the teacher and the textbook. This paper is intended to review the related literature on input in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and find out what kind of input is best comprehended by language learners.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of concept map training as well as the interaction between concept mapping and test type on EFL learners' listening comprehension. Sixty-four female second-term freshmen university students studying English Translation as their major were randomly divided into four groups. The first two groups, serving as the experimental group, received concept map training during a period consisting of six sessions but the other two groups, functioning as the control group, received no map training during this period. At the end of the term one of the groups in the experimental group and one of the groups in the control group were randomly given a concept map comprehension test type while the two remaining groups took a multiple choice test type. The obtained results revealed that concept mapping leads to an improvement in the students' comprehension; however, the effect of test type was not significant.

This paper investigates control constructions in Persian by running various tests of control offered by Hornstein (l 999, 2003, 2004) in his Movement Theory of Control. And those proposed by Landau (2003, 2004) in his Agree-based Approach to OC under Standard Theory of Control. The Persian data show consistency with Landau's tests of control, whereas, they prove to be inconsistent with those of Hornstein's. Therefore, Hornstein's theory that OC PRO is the residue of movement is refuted, while Landau's Agree-base Approach is supported by the data in this paper, including Persian showing case concord in its subjunctive control construction.

The plethora of the hypotheses put forth as to the nature and structure of second language ability, in particular concerning the lexicon-syntax interface, have one face with an apparently informidable problem still to be resolved. Various structuralist hypotheses put one on the horns of a dilemma. On the one hand, one could come up with such pure structuralist hypotheses as Harrisian which attach little or no significance to the very delicate role played by lexicon as an essential element of language learning, isolating the knowledge of the mental lexical items and syntax. On the other, a latest trend of linguistic assumptions as asserted so brilliantly by linguists of the caliber of Chomsky, not turning a blind eye to the magic of lexicon in bridging the gap between and associating the lexical items and syntax, emphasizes the integration of the two. Accordingly, the present study aims at collecting some empirical evidence to see whether these two integral aspects of language, namely lexicon and syntax, are separate or integrated. More specifically, the study aims at providing an answer to the following question: is text-reconstruction (as a linguistic activity which resorts to the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary for accomplishment) lexicon-based or grammar-based? A total of 18 last-year students majoring in English language and literature took part in the study. Concurrent and retrospective thinking aloud were the two techniques adopted in this study. The findings take side with a lexicon-dominated integration-oriented approach to text-reconstruction
