Reforestation with autochthonous species should take into account the preservation of the temporal variability and the geographic structure of genetic diversity in forest species. In order to provide empirical data about the suitability of methods of sampling material, genetic comparison of 10 beech populations (at least 40 trees per population) and their progenies (seeds of 10 mother trees per population, each tree 7 seeds) were analysed using four highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. The allelic multiplicity was higher in seed samples than adult trees indicating gene flow from adjacent plant populations. The comparison for genetic diversity measures between adult trees and seed generation revealed no significant differences for allelic richness (Na), effective number of alleles (Ne), and number of rare alleles (Nr), neither observed (Ho) nor expected heterozygosity (He). Genetic differentiation in allelic frequencies between adult trees and seeds generation were rather low (Fst = 0.058). A close genetic relationship between adult trees from seed generation of each population, which revealed by un-weighted pair group method based on arithmetic average (UPGMA) and supported by an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), were detected. In this paper some aspects related to seed sampling were discussed

Onobrychis melanotricha (Fabaceae) is an endemic perennial herb in Iran and has two varieties. For investigating on infraspecific variation within O. melanotricha, 14 releves were performed in its different habitats in Hamedan province according to the Braun-Blanquet method and samples were gathered using phytosociological approach. Results showed that each variety occupies one of main mountainous and sub-mountainous habitats. They correlate together by a continuous gradient in morphological characters. In addition, different patterns of variation and related effective factors are discussed. O. melanotricha var. ecbatanaica is described and illustrated from Hamedan Province as a new variety. It differs from the type variety by having the large simple leaves.

We here present molecular phylogeny of the genus Rochelia (Boraginaceae-Eritrichieae). A total of 8 species of Rochelia and 2 species of Lappula as outgroups were included in analyses using nrDNA ITS and cpDNA trnL-F separately and in combination. To examine evolutionary trend of morphological characters, we mapped six diagnostic characters on the combined tree using MacClade 4. The analyses revealed that sect. Rochelia due to inclusion of the monotypic section Cryptocarpa (Rochelia cardiosepala) is not monophyletic. Likewise, its subsections, Rochelia and Pedunculares are paraphyletic. Rochelia persica and R. disperma along with R. cancellata of the monospecific subgenus Neo-Rochelia, as unresolved branches, were sisters to the remaining species. One of six diagnostic characters examined (non-hamate tip of calyx hairs) had evolved as reversal in both R. persica and R. bungei and the other one (nutlets completely clasping the adaxial part of gynobase) had undergone parallel evolution between R. cancellata plus R. peduncularis and R. cardiosepala. Based on the present molecular analyses, the current infrageneric classification of Rochelia, at least at the sectional and subsectional level based upon traditional morphological characters is artificial.

The morphological characters of Aegilops crassa Boiss. and its distribution in Iran was studied using 32 populations. A wide range of variation in quantitative (plant height, awn length of lemma of upper spikelet, teeth length of glume of upper spikelet and spike length including awn) and qualitative (spike shape, glume hair and leaf surface) characters were found; however no subdivision in this species reasonably appeared to be valid. Geographically, Aegilops crassa occurs mainly along Zagroos mountains in the western parts of Iran.

In this study original mitotic chromosome counts are presented for 4 Oxytropis species from 4 sections of the genus Oxytropis in Iran including: O. bicornis (O. sect. Oxytropis) (2n = 2x = 16), O. suavis (O. sect. Ortholoma) (2n = 2x = 16), O. aucheri (O. sect. Eumorpha) (2n = 2x = 16) and O. karjaginii (O. sect. Janthina) (2n = 4x = 32). This report is the first cytogenetic analysis of these taxa. All taxa (with exception of O. karjaginii) are diploid and possess 2n = 2x = 16 chromosome number, consistent with the proposed base number of x = 8. In addition, meiotic chromosome count and behavior are presented for O. masanderanensis (O. sect. Ortholoma) (2n = 2x = 16). Although this taxon displayed regular bivalent pairing and chromosome segregation at meiosis, but some abnormalities were observed.

In order to clarify the taxonomic state of some Iranian Papaver species, cluster and PCA analysis of data sets resulted from macro- and micromorphological study of 14 species belonging to the genus Papaver in Iran were performed. Macromorphological characters of all species included in the study were examined. Pollen grains and seeds belonging to the species were scanned using SEM microscopy. High correlation among the results obtained from analyses of 38 morphological, 11 palynological and 6 seed characters was observed especially at lower levels. Based on our results, P. gaubae is reduced as a variety named P. glaucum var. gaubae and the name P. piptostigma is regarded as a synonym of the older P. macrostomum. In addition, our results do not confirm opinions indicating synonymy of P. fugax with the older name P. armeniacum. Also, P. halophilum is regarded as a variety of P. macrostomum.
