Pages 118-124IntroductionCommon audiometric tests can assess if there is any hearing injury or not, but they can not assess the impact of disability due to hearing loss, individual's satisfaction level from rehabilitation services, and the impact of disability on life, due to hearing loss. These items can be assessed using self-assessment questionnaires. This study aimed to use self-assessment Profile of Aided Loudness (PAL) questionnaire to compare satisfaction and loudness levels of sounds in young individuals and elderlies with moderate and severe hearing loss using hearing aid.Materials And MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 20 young individuals with age range of 20 to 40 years and 20 elderlies with age range from 60 to 80 years were enrolled. Satisfaction and sound loudness levels of the hearing aid were assessed using self-assessment PAL questionnaire. Data were collected and analyzed using computer statistical information analysis software.ResultsLoudness level had no significant differences among young individuals and elderlies, and women and men. Loudness level had no significant differences for soft sounds, but for average and loud sounds, the differences were significant. Satisfaction levels did not show any significant differences between moderate and severe hearing loss, and between women and men; but the difference between young individuals and elderlies was significant.ConclusionPAL index is efficient to assess the understood sound loudness in an individual with and without hearing aid. Comparing the outcomes of this questionnaire with normal levels is used to select and adjust the hearing aid. The results of this study show that loudness understanding is affected by the level of hearing loss, and satisfaction level is affected by age factor. Keywords: Loudness perception, Surveys, questionnaires, Hearing loss

Pages 125-130IntroductionSpeech is a complex motor skill that requires control and coordination of different systems such as respiration, vocalization, and articulation. Diadochokinesis is one of the oral motor measurements which is calculated per time. Diadochokinesis data are useful in determining the physiological state of speech production. This is an indicator for assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with neurological speech disorders. General health can affect the speed and accuracy of body and oral motor by age. Considering that there are no data on this criterion in Persian-speaking elderly people, in this study, the average rate of alternating and sequential motion rates (AMR and SMR) of the syllables were studied in a 60- to 80-year old adults in Isfahan City, Iran.Materials And Methods42 participant repeated /pa/, /ta/, /ka/, and /pataka/ sequences, quickly and accurately for five seconds with one minute rest between each task. Speech samples were collected using a digital recorder, then rate of diadochokinesis was calculated in syllable per seconds.ResultsMean rate of each task per seconds was obtained as 4.06, 3.90, and 3.66 syllable per seconds for /pa/, /ta/, /ka/, and /pataka/ sequences, respectively. The reduction in velocity was seen from anterior to posterior. Mean alternating motion rate was 1.58 syllable per seconds for /pataka/ sequence.ConclusionThis study compensates the lack of normal information via providing descriptive results of the diadochokinesis rates of Persian-speaking Isfahanian elderlies. Therefore, a better and more reliable judgment of speech movement rate abnormalities and motor speech disorders in elderly people aged 60-80 years would be possible. The results confirm the inter-lingual differences of diadochokinesis, slowness of rates by aging, and the gradual reduction of the diadochokinesis rate towards the back of the oral cavity. Keywords: Speech production measurement, Speech intelligibility, Elderly, Iran

Shoulder injuries are very common in sports such as table tennis in which the athletes upper limb operates higher than shoulder level. On the other hand, weak or inappropriate shoulder muscle activity can be related to incidence of an injury. The purpose of this study was to compare the activation of selected scapulohumeral muscles in table tennis athletes between healthy and shoulder impingement syndrome group during a strike of forehand topspin.
Materials And MethodsThirty national-level male table tennis players aged 20 to 28 years were selected purposefully and divided into shoulder impingement syndrome (n = 15), and healthy (n = 15) groups. The surface electromyographic activity of selected muscles from scapulothoracic and glenohumeral joints was recorded during the strike of forehand topspin.
ResultsThe level of the activity of the serratus anterior muscle (P = 0.007) and supraspinatus muscle (P = 0.001) in the shoulder impingement syndrome group was significantly lower and the level of upper trapezius muscle activation in the shoulder impingement syndrome subjects was significantly higher (P = 0.009) in shoulder impingement syndrome group compared to the healthy group. However, no significant differences were observed in the activation level of lower trapezius (P = 0.301), anterior deltoid (P = 0.314), and biceps brachii (P = 0.291) muscles.
ConclusionThe results of this study showed that patients with impingement syndrome demonstrated unnatural and changed levels of muscle activity in scapulohumeral articulation during the forehand topspin strike. The findings confirm the theories that shoulder impingement may be related to changes in the activity level of scapulothoracic and glenohumeral muscles.
