There is not much information about the Shia, their cities and communities in the fourth Lunar Hijri century, mainly due to lack of interest in human geography among historians of that period. Nevertheless, examining various historical and geographical books, as well as the writings on hadith and the narrators (i.e. rejāl) of hadith, reveals some information that points to the status and significance of the Shia and their impact on the social and cultural developments of the Islamic world.

Identifying and introducing the Character of Imam 'Ali, as a perfect man and pattern of statesmen and general public, is among the necessities of this era. In this paper, it is attempted to provide an image of Imam 'Ali through his own words in Nahj al-Balaghah. The Imam's scholarly personality, his certitude, clear-sightedness, his ethical status in fields like piety, asceticism, uncompromising search for justice, bravery and companionship with Prophet Muhammad are stressed in this paper. It should be mentioned, however, that Imam 'Ali was never willing to praise himself, and whatever he said about himself was necessary to be said.

There is no doubt that freedom is amongst the most inportant devine gifts which are placed in humans. The author argues that the freedom, heroism and liberty promoted by the Shiite faith has been reflected in the Shia's poetry. In this paper, the concepts of freedom and gentlemanliness (azadagi whose Persian equivalents derived from the same word, azadi) are highlighted in the works of Shiite poets, from Kassā'i Marwazi, an early Shiite poet, to Hakim Safai Isfahani, who was composing during the turn of the twentieth century. The development of the Shiite poetry is analysed during the period between the fourth and the fourteenth Lunar Hijri centuries in chronological order.

In this piece, in order to enlighten the structure and characteristics of demography of scholars in Iran and particularly in Iraq, the author tries to provide a clear demographic picture of the clergy population in Iraq, during the Ottoman Empire era, and particularly in the thirteenth and fourteenth Lunar Hijri centuries. Drawing upon historical works and biographies, the author employs a sociological and demographic approach in order to explain how Najaf and Karbala became the centre of Shiite scholarship after the Safavids. In this research, the clergy studying in the two cities are divided into eight groups, on the basis of eight generations of distinguished scholars. An examination of the clergy's ethnic origin indicates that those of Iranian origin were much more numerous than the Arab clergy.
