This paper presents a failure analysis on a failed intake valve in a gasoline engine. During an endurance test، an intake valve was broken and caused some damages on the piston. Material examinations (by a light microscope and also a scanning electron microscope) were conducted on the fracture surface of the intake valve shaft. Results showed that no pores or defects could be observed and the microstructure and the hardness of the material were conformed to the specification (the standard map extracted by the manufacture). But a mechanical factor caused the damage which consisted of a reversal bending load due to the misalignment of the valve shaft. The misalignment was caused by the thermal deformation in the valve shaft. The engine was working in a hot condition. Also، it was a reversal condition (with zero mean stress) due to the rotation of the valve shaft during engine working. Also، the fracture surface demonstrated beach marks due to cyclic loadings. In this case study، it was found that cracks initiated from the outer surface of the valve shaft and propagated through the inside of the fracture surface.

This paper presents a comparison between measured and predicted results of the in-cylinder tumble flow and the flow coefficient generated by a port-valve-liner assembly on a steady-flow test bench. In this study، computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods were employed to gain further insight into characteristics of an engine. The purpose was to advance understanding of the stationary turbulence process via computational techniques، at the same time. A simultaneous computer simulation was carried out to predict the in-cylinder flow field of the same engine under the same operating condition، using the Fluent software. The tumble ratio and the flow coefficient from both the numerical simulation and the experimental measurement were compared. A reasonably good level of the agreement has been achieved. Finally، this paper provides a useful validation study for a range of turbulence models for the in-cylinder flow and shows the rate of the tumble flow dispersion in the cylinder.

This paper presents mean value models developed for modeling gas flow over the compressor، the turbine and the wastegate (WG) in a TC gasoline engine not equipped with a hot film air-mass flow meter (HFM). The turbine flow was modeled by an isentropic nozzle with an effective pressure ratio. A physically sensible model was developed for estimating the WG flow and its position which estimates them over a wide range of the engine operating conditions. Finally، a novel model for estimating the compressor air flow was proposed، using coupling between powers generated by the turbine and used by the compressor. All models are simple and accurate enough to be utilized for engine real-time control applications. Experimental results from a modern gasoline TC engine were used to validate all the models. Prediction results from models were in very good agreement with the experimental measurements.

In this article، the electrode erosion and the gap growth of spark plugs were measured on of a CNG fueled engine after durability tests. Then، the required ignition voltage and the spark quality were investigated by a spark plug test rig. Considering results of measurements، the gap growth increased as the running time increased. Thus، the gap growth of spark plugs with 200 and 280 hours running time were 2 and 4. 4 times more than the gap growth of spark plugs with 80 hours running time. Results of the voltage test show that the required voltage is increased with the pressure. The required voltage at 9 bar was 2 times higher than 1 bar. The increase of the required voltage and the adverse effect on the spark quality due to the gap growth are due to more running time. Accordingly، the required voltage was increased 11% at 5 bar while the gap growth was 20%. Comparing results of new and used spark plugs showed that in addition to the gap growth، deposits on the electrodes surface could lead to increase the required voltage.

Most of internal combustion engines have one or two heat shields that have been installed on the exhaust manifold to avoid the heat transfer to upper parts of the engine such as the valve cover. In some engines، this part fails due to the fracture and causes engine noise and other failures in the engine. In this paper، the failure of a heat shield due to vibrational loads of the engine has been investigated using the finite element method and experimental methods. Since heat shields have been made from thin shells، their analysis can be done in the vibrational field of plates. The analysis of the investigated heat shield in this field shows that two of the first resonance frequencies of heat shield are in the range of the engine speed and locations of heat shield cracks are at the maximum deflection positions.

This paper presents the coating thickness effect on the stress distribution of a coated cylinder head. A typical thermal barrier coating was applied on a diesel engine cylinder head. Thus، the residual stress which occurred during the plasma thermal spraying was also considered. The coating system consisted of two layers; a metallic bond coat and a ceramic top coat. The bond coat thickness is considered as 50 to 250 µm and the top coat thickness was considered as 200 to 800 µm. The stress distribution was found by the finite element analysis using the ABAQUS software. Then، stress distributions were compared for various coating thicknesses. Finally، optimized values for each layer are suggested.
