In AC-DC power conversion, active front end rectifiers offer several advantages over diode rectifiers such as bidirectional power flow capability, sinusoidal input currents and controllable power factor. A digital finite control set model predictive controller based on fixed-point computations of an active front end rectifier with unity displacement of input voltage and current to improve dynamic response has been presented in this paper. Here by using a predictive cost function and fixed-point computations, the optimal switching state to be applied in the next sampling is selected. The low-cost architecture is implemented on a FPGA platform. Designed architecture is constructed based on fixed-point arithmetic with minimal functional units. The control algorithm, which is used in this architecture, is Finite-Set Model Predictive Control (FS-MPC). Compared with other controllers, this controller provides a much better dynamic performance. Finally, in order to evaluate the accuracy of the fixed-point computations several cases for various loading conditions and word lengths are verified.

In this paper, a new sensorless model reference adaptive method is used for direct control of active and reactive power of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). In order to estimate the rotor speed, a high frequency signal injection scheme is implemented. In this study, to improve the accuracy of speed estimation, two methods are suggested. First, the coefficients of proportional-integral (PI) blocks are optimized by using Krill Herd algorithm. In the second method, the fuzzy logic control method is applied in the estimator structure instead of PI controllers. The simulation results for the proposed methods illustrate that the estimated speed perfectly matches the actual speed of the DFIG. In addition, the desired slip value is achieved due to the accurate response. On the other hand, the active and reactive power responses have fast dynamics and relatively low oscillations. Moreover, the fuzzy controller shows more robustness against the variations of machine parameters.

Permanent magnet motors have been considered for a variety of applications due to their features such as high power density and high efficiency. One of the issues that should be investigated in the design of these motors is the demagnetization problem. Usually, the demagnetization analysis is carried out in a steady state, while demagnetization effect in dynamic condition is more considerable due to pulse shaped of armature field. Based on this fact, in this paper, dynamic demagnetization is investigated for an IPM V‑shaped magnet. This study has been done for two types of magnet, each one in static & dynamic conditions and the results are compared. Moreover, the effect of flux weakening regime on demagnetization is investigated.

This paper proposes an improved control method based on modified Delta-Sigma Modulator (DSM) to enhance transient response and improve harmonic contents of buck DC-DC converter. The main advantages of the proposed method are improving the output voltage frequency spectrum, correction of the output voltage harmonic contents and sideband harmonics, reduction of switching noise peaks at the output voltage, operating buck converter in continuous current mode independent of load current, significant reduction of inductor current ripple, improving the transient response of buck converter and correction of the input current harmonics. This progress is achieved by applying improved control method based on proposed forgetting function to enhance transient response of buck converter and also by using modified DSM to improve harmonic spectrum of the output voltage and reduce inductor current ripples. The simulation results confirm performance and feasibility of the proposed system.

Wind energy is one of the most promising renewable energy resources. Due to instantaneous variations of the wind speed, an appropriate Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) method is necessary for maximizing the captured energy from the wind at different speeds. The most commonly used MPPT algorithms are Tip Speed Ratio (TSR), Power Signal Feedback (PSF), Optimal Torque Control (OTC) and Hill Climbing Search (HCS). Each of these algorithms has some advantages and also some major drawbacks. In this paper, a novel hybrid MPPT algorithm is proposed which modifies the conventional methods in a way that eliminates their drawbacks and yields an improved performance. This proposed algorithm is faster in tracking the maximum power point and provides a more accurate response with lower steady state error. Moreover, it presents a great performance under conditions with intensive wind speed variations. The studied Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) consists of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) connected to the dc link through a Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) rectifier. The proposed algorithm and the conventional methods are applied to this WECS and their performances are compared using the simulation results. These results approve the satisfactory performance of the proposed algorithm and its notable advantages over the conventional methods.

This paper introduces a novel two transistors forward topology employing a z-source to achieve ZVZCS and power transformer resetting for various applications. Comparing with the forward converter, this topology has the advantage of displaying ZCS condition with an added Z-Source and no additional switches when the switches turn on, and that ZVS condition happens when the switches turn off. Duty cycle of the topology can exceed 50 percent. As a result, these converters are suitable for applications with high efficiency. In this paper, structure and properties of the topology will be discussed in details. Then the design principles will be presented. Finally, the benefits aforementioned will be approved in practice through a simple forward converter.

An inherent problem of single-phase rectifiers is the existence of a pulsating portion in the input power, which pulsates at twice the grid frequency. If this pulsating power is transferred to the DC-link, it causes a significant amount of second-order harmonic at the output voltage. Since in many applications, such a high level of DC oscillation is not acceptable, so the pulsating power must be effectively filtered. A convenient solution to eliminate the output voltage oscillations is to use a capacitor with a relatively high capacity at the rectifier output. Due to the fact that the high capacity capacitors for this application usually have a short lifetime and occupy a lot of space, this solution cannot be considered as a proper one. In this paper, a new active method with the minimum of current and voltage stress is proposed to effectively eliminate the pulsating power and significantly reduce the required capacitance of the output filter. The proposed method is able to reduce the volume of the converter and increase its reliability and power density. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method are confirmed by extensive simulations in the MATLAB/Simulink.

In this paper, sliding mode control (SMC) for a bidirectional buck/boost DC-DC converter (BDC) with constant frequency in continuous conduction mode (CCM) is discussed. Since the converter is a high-order converter, the reduced-order sliding manifold is exploited. Because of right-half-plan zero (RHPZ) in the converter’s duty ratio to output voltage transfer function, sliding mode current controller is used. This controller benefits from various advantages such as fast dynamic response, robustness, stable and small variation of the settling time over a wide range of operation conditions. Because the converter operates in both step-down and step-up modes, two sliding manifold is derived for each mode. The existence and stability conditions are analyzed for both SMC in step-down and step-up modes. Finally, Simulation results are also provided to justify the feasibility of the controller using MATLAB/Simulink.

In this paper, the author proposes a sensorless direct torque control (DTC) of an induction motor (IM) fed by seven-level NPC inverter using artificial neural networks (ANN) and fuzzy logic controller. Fuzzy PI controller is used for controlling the rotor speed and ANN applied in switching select stator voltage. The control method proposed in this paper can reduce the torque, stator flux and total harmonic distortion (THD) value of stator current, and especially improve system good dynamic performance and robustness in high and low speeds.

This paper presents the comparative study of three phase twenty five level diode clamped and cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters. The comparison is made in respect of requirement of devices, quality of output voltage and reduction of total harmonic distortion at the multilevel inverter terminals. In this work multicarrier sinusoidal pulse modulation control methods of Phase disposition (PD-PWM), phase opposition disposition (POD-PWM) and Alternative Phase Opposition Disposition (APOD-PWM) pulse width modulation control strategies are applied for both diode clamped and cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters and compared its total harmonic distortion. The performance of both diode and cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters is investigated and compared. Based on simulation results it is observed that the output voltage of the cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters is better as compared to the diode clamped multilevel inverter. The proposed multilevel inverters are simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software.
