  • Effects of Religious and Ethnic Thought of Dogon on the Formation of Native Temples and their Reflections on the Establishment of Mosques in West Africa
Mohammad Reza Pour Jaafar Page 9
In the study about the effects of religious thought on architectural formation, researchers usually take into account divine and universal religions rather than the ethnic ones. Native people dwelling in different parts of the world have their own particular beliefs with respect to the worldview and cosmic life that often reflect into their architecture especially religious ones. Dogon—one of the ancient ethnic people of West Africa—too have particular temples that reflect as a source of their religious thought. Gods, cosmology and beliefs of this ethnic group led to the formation of a particular religious and residential architecture that apart from religious tenets have complete coordination with the nature. Dogon built three types of temple i.e. Ava, Lebi and Binu (the latter two types form the majority). With the emergence of Islam in Africa, especially in West Africa, native mosques also came up gradually, interacting with temples. This interaction probably accomplished to a kind of religious architecture that has imprints of both architectures. Similarly, natural materials, soil and construction methods in the region too have had effect on the formation of this type of architecture. In the first part of this article, we have tried to discuss cosmology, worldview, customs and beliefs as well as religious architecture of Dogon. In continuation, we have focused on the native mosques of West Africa and their commonality with Dogon architecture. The results of the research show that the native mosques of West Africa have had much influence from the Prophet Mosque of Medina as well as from Dogon’s constrictions. With regard to bodily dimension and building materials, they are in conformity with Dogon temple.
  • The Manner of Emergence of Islamic Cities in Africa
    Ashraf-Alsadat Bagheri Page 33
Islam is a civil religion and the same aspect has helped the Islamic culture and civilization grow and expand unparallel. During the early Islamic centuries i.e. until about 6th century Hijri, creative face and Islamic vision went all along and that was the time when dynamism of Islamic cities, with respect to rich Islamic culture, became evident. During that period, science, art and craft were blossoming on the entire conquered Muslim land. Rise of Islam was the beginning of great human civilization. This divine religion, apart from cultural encouragement to human races, caused the emergence and divulgence of modern civilization around the world. The growth and expansion of Islam to the far-flung points led to the creation of big cities. As a complete and comprehensive ideology, Islamic Civilization influenced all dimension of social and human life. With the arrival of Islam to the conquered land, for various regions, they felt the need to establish new cities for settling down Muslim population and occasionally for military encampments. By this way, cities came into being in Islamic domain. Urbanization in the Islamic empire grew from 3rd century and reached to the utmost level three centuries later. Islam transformed not only the ancient cities but caused the growth of new ones with Islamic characteristics. Victories of Arabs in West Africa during 7th and 8th centuries AD led to the emergence of Islamic civilization as well as new cities in this continent. Through descriptive-analytical method as well as based on available library resources, the current paper tries to study as how and why cities sprang up in Africa (including cities of Morocco, Cyrene, Fez and Sjlmas that have historical importance in Africa) during different historical periods of Monotheists, Marabouts, Fatemids, Idrisis etc.

  • Effect of Cultural Revolution of Algeria on Islamic Revolution of Iran: Emphasis on Personality and Thought of Ali Shariati and Francis Fannon
    Mahboobeh Ghaemi Talab Page 97
Revolution with the purport like fundamental changes in social, political and economic structure has often attracted the attention of researchers whether in the past or the contemporary era. However, quite a few revolutions could successfully affect their surroundings. The Algerian Revolution was the one where 10 million Muslims with half a million army encountered with France which was one of the powerful imperial powers. During his study in France, Ali Shariati as an ideologue of Iranian revolution was contemporary to the Algerian revolution. He cooperated with Algerian freedom fighters. With his belief on revolutionary thoughts, Shariati translated some of the works of African writers such as Francis Fannon into Persian. He also emphasized on the need to begin combat against the dictatorial regime in Iran. The revolutionary thoughts coming up from revolutionary experiences of anti-imperialistic and peoples’ movements around the world could have been constructive for the Iranian revolution. As an Islamic nation with strong religious belief as well as being in the geopolitical region of the Middle East, Iran played sensitive role during the cold war and it was considered as one of the members of CENTO. Iranian authorities had close relationship with the West in a way that just months before the victory of Islamic Revolution, US President Jimmy Carter after his visit to Iran called it a positive island. The sudden occurrence of the Islamic Revolution disturbed the whole international equation and amazed a large number of analysts worldwide. This paper intends to study the effects of the Cultural Revolution of Algeria on the Islamic Revolution in Iran with emphasis on the personality and thought of Ali Shariati. The hypothesis of this paper is that the Algerian revolution from religious point of view as well as from its spirit as a combat against imperialism and occupation was a suitable model for a west-stricken and third world country like Iran. Iranians were much influenced from the independent-loving Algerians. In this process, one must name a personality like Ali Shariati. Taking descriptive-analytical method, this study first discusses international situation and the manner of the Algerian revolution. Then, it focuses on its effects on internal arena and the Iranian revolution. The main emphasis of the discussion is the role of the Algerian revolution as a model for combat. Among sources used in this paper, apart from the works of Shariati, are parts of the writings of Fannon, Hamid Alegar and Niki Kudi.
  • Study about the Condition of Muslims in Nigeria
    Navid Rasooli Page 113
Islam and Christianity are considered the two main and principal religions in Nigeria. Based on available data and other accounts, it is an undeniable fact that Muslims form majority in this country. In other words, Nigeria allocates the largest Muslim population in an African nation. Islam flourished in Nigeria through Arab traders and scholars who entered this region via northern African nations of Libya and Sudan hence; this religion propagated quickly among local people especially animist groups. This divine belief could wipe off ignorance and transformed their values and customs. As a whole, until 18th century, Islam was easily accommodated among local African inhabitants as a comprehensive socio-cultural system and as a political force it was established in a way that Nigerian Muslims could be effective on internal and regional issues. Taking into account library and field materials, the current article tries to study social, political, cultural and economic impacts of Islam on Nigerians. It also reviews strong and weak points of this divine religion and the problem faced by it in this country.
  • Study about Relations between India and Africa: From Ideological Slogans to Pragmatic Exigencies
    Ahmad Bakhshi Page 129
In the course of history, the geographical proximity of India and Africa through Indian Ocean could lead to the establishment of relationship between the two regions. Their ties expanded to the extent that a large number of Indians before 1800AD permanently settled in Africa and took away their cultural heritage. With the penetration of British in India and East Africa and similarly their use of Indian human resources, we witness a great workforce in this region apart from the presence of traders that today as Indian immigrants have been playing key role in the expansion of ties between India and Africa. Early freedom to India compare to African nations, non-allied politics of India and ancient positive history along with Indian immigrants provided suitable opportunity for them to settled in Africa so that they could propound their own combat model in this continent. During occupation and wars of freedom movements, political relationship between India and Africa got ideological dimensions. Between 1947 and 1990, this country in its foreign policies, despite much ups and downs, followed a new method in the international system that without roughness and passive resistance as well as participation of all social groups is an inspirational source for achieving freedom for the occupied African nations. But after the end of bipolar world and the emergence of expansionist governments in India, there were fundamental changes in its foreign policies. Consequently, India preferred economic cooperation and pragmatism based on reciprocal benefits hence; substituted ideological politics of cold war era to geo-economics exigencies. With these political changes as well as with reference to political, economic and cultural importance of Africa, Indian policies also transformed in this continent. With new regional and international structures and playing with the popular slogan of south, programs like G9, cooperation with African Union, new participation plan for Africa (Nepad), IBSA and organizing India-Africa summit are attempts to achieve reciprocal benefits and boosting multilateral ties between India and Africa. With descriptive-analytical method, this paper tries to study Indian policies in Africa and the manner of growing bilateral ties, changes and continuation of polices.
