In this paper the effects of inclination angle and the direction of movement of moving walls of an enclosure on nanofluid mixed convection have been investigated for two different cases. In the first case natural and forced convection effects are in agreement, whereas in the second case they are opposed. Simulations have been performed for temperature dependent as well as temperature independent thermal conductivity and viscosity of water-Al2O3 nanofluid. The volume fractions of nanoparticles between 0 and 0.08 have been considered and the inclination angle of the cavity has been changed between 0 and 90°. To solve the governing equations the SIMPLE algorithm and a finite volume based method have been used. The results show by increasing the inclination angle, which enhances the forced convection, the three convective cells at low inclination angles change to one cell. The trend for change of average Nusselt number with increasing volume fraction is different for temperature independent cases compared to temperature dependent cases. Therefore, in order to obtain accurate results in numerical simulations, the temperature dependency of properties should be considered.

Drag and lift forces imposed on various bodies employed in engineering applications such as square and circular cylinders are highly dependent on the nature and characteristics of flow field around these structures. Therefore, the detailed investigation of the flow behavior around such bluff bodies has important engineering applications. In the present work, the characteristics of flow in the downstream of three different models with the circle and square cross sections is investigated in the wind tunnel using the hot wire anemometry. The blockage ratio for the circular and square cylinders at zero angle of attack is 2.2 percent, while it is 3.14 percent for the square cylinder with 45-degree angle of attack. For the model with a square cross section, the experiments were performed for both zero and 45-degree angle of attack. In this study, the effects of different Reynolds number and the cross-section of the cylinders are studied with the use of measured velocities and their fluctuation components. The Strouhal number and other flow characteristics in the downstream of the cylinder are compared with the published results in the literature. A good agreement is observed between the present results and the reported results. Comparing the result of three models showed that the reduced flow velocity behind 45 degrees orientated square cylinder in the interval X/D

Moving of flame in a ceramic porous burner with natural gas fuel is studied experimentally. Six thermocouples are mounted on the wall of the burner to track the flame. The results are presented via temperature profiles in different times. Two cases were observed in flame moving. At the first case, flame moves rapidly to the beneath of the medium; while in the second one flame gradually penetrates the medium and thereafter moves beneath of it. The effects of equivalence ratio, firing rate, pore density and thickness of porous medium on the flame movement is studied.

In this paper we present a novel method based on using Exponential Basis Functions (EBFs) to solve heat conduction problem in axially layered materials. In the first step, we have considered each layer of material as a separate element. Then the solution in each element was approximated by a summation of EBFs satisfying the differential equation of transient heat conduction problem. The unknown coefficients of the series solution were related to initial condition and Dirichlet side conditions of each layer employing a discrete transformation technique. Finally, the general solution of material was completed by satisfying the continuity conditions between adjacent layers in a manner similar to conventional finite element method. In this hybrid method, a collocation scheme was used for satisfying the time dependent boundary conditions as well as the initial conditions. The capability of the presented technique was investigated in the solution of some benchmark problems.

Modeling of the combined conduction-radiation heat transfer in multilayer insulation has been done. Governing equations of the problem are integro-differential and there is no exact solution for them. So numerical procedure with approximate solutions have been used. Main governing equations were energy equation and two-flux equations that respectively, using the finite volume and finite differences have been discretized. Numerical solution is validated with Ozisik’s solution and published experimental results. Total heat flux and effective thermal conductivity obtained via steady state results. Dimensionless temperature distribution and dimensionless radiative and conductive heat fluxes along sample thickness obtained. Near the hot boundary, dominating mode is radiation, so it is suggested that reflective screens to be located near hot boundary. For lower temperature differences, the dominating mode is conduction, so number of reflective screens does not influence effective thermal conductivity so much. In all steps of validation, the numerical results have good agreements with published data in references. Finally, as for radiation behavior along insulation thickness, it is suggested that just the foils near the hot boundary, to be coated with gold for sake of cost cutting. In addition, it is understood that layer density has an optimum value and this value does not changes if the boundary conditions and the material remain unchanged.

Oxygenated additives are added to base gasoline for such purposes as increase of Octane Number, improvement of engine performance and decease of exhaust emissions. In Iran, Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is used as an additive to the base gasoline. Due to destructive environmental effects of the said material, our country, the same as other developed countries, should seek to use a replacement for the said additive. The combination of the base gasoline and fuel additives has such limitations as increase of the quantity of volatility, the reid vapor pressure (RVP) and decrease of calorific value of the fuel obtained. In this research, Ethanol, Tertiary Butyl Alcohol (TBA) and Metyl Tertiary Butyl Ether in the volumetric ratios of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 15 and 20 are blended with the base gasoline of Tehran Oil Refinery Company (TORC). The behavior of volatility of the obtained fuel has been investigated based on ASTM standards. The results obtained from the said investigation reveal that in case of use of Ethanol as a fuel additive, certain changes should be made in the formulation of base gasoline. The said combination has an undesirable effect on other characteristics of fuel such as Octane Number. Addition of Tertiary Butyl Alcohol to gasoline shall result in trivial increase of the reid vapor pressure. Consequently, there will be no need for replacement of light straight run gasoline (LSRG) compounds with heavier compounds in order to decrease the reid vapor pressure.

Numerical modeling of compressible two-phase flow is a challenging and important subject in practical cases and research problems. In these problems, mutual effect of shock wave interaction creates a discontinuity in fluid properties and interface of two fluids as a second discontinuity lead to some difficulties in numerical approximations and estimating an accurate interface during hydro-dynamical capturing process. The main objective of this research is accurate capturing of the interface and numerical study of shock wave during gas-gas and gas-liquid interface of two-phase flows. For this purposes HLLC Riemann solver and Godunov numerical method was used for a hyperbolic two-pressure two-fluid model where programming was conducted in two-space dimensional with second order accuracy. Various one and two-dimensional problems were simulated such as compression and expansion shock tubes, shock wave interaction with R22/air bubble, underwater explosion and hypersonic shock with M=6 interaction with a cylindrical water column. The numerical results obtained in this attempt exhibit very good agreement with experimental results, as well as previous numerical results presented by other researchers based on other numerical methods.

At current paper, heat transfer and pressure drop of TiO2-water nanofluid are investigated at nanoparticles volume fraction between 0.002 and 0.2, and Reynolds number between 8000 and 49000 experimetally in a double tube counter-flow heat exchanger. The results show that the Nusselt number and pressure drop of nanofluid increase by increasing nanoparticles volume fraction or Reynolds number, and the pressure drop of nanofluid is higher than the base fluid. The increament percentage in pressure drop of nanofluid compared with the base fluid is higher at lower Reynolds number. The enhancement value in the Nusselt number decreased with increasing the Reynolds number at 0.002 volume fraction. The Nusselt number increment value for nanoparticles volume fractions of 0.01 and 0.02 are identical for all Reynolds number. Therefore, more efficiency obtained at low Reynolds number by using nanofuid with 0.002-volume fraction, and at high Reynolds number for 0.01 and 0.02 volume fractions.

Adsorption chillers are considered for the industrial and air conditioning applications due to their advantages over the conventional refrigeration systems. The performance of an adsorption chiller is mainly influenced by the adsorbent bed, therefore, this paper investigates a tube heat exchanger with plate fins as the adsorbent bed and silica gel(SWS-1L)-water as working pairs. In order to model the adsorbent bed, the continuity, momentum and energy equations are solved in a body fitted coordinate system and both the inter particle and intra particle mass transfer resistances are considered. The control volume method is used to solve the time dependent equations in four basic domains of thermal fluid, metal tube, fins and adsorbent bed, simultaneously. Flow patterns and pressure distributions though out the bed are examined in detail for all cycle. The results indicate that the particles diameter has a negligible effect on the coefficient of performance, while the specific cooling power and the cycle time have an optimum value for particles diameter of 0.37mm.
