Selective harmonic elimination (SHE) is a powerful modulation scheme aims to find the required switching angles in order to eliminate the number of undesired harmonics. SHE is a complicated problem which consists of several nonlinear equations which have multiple local minima. In order to eliminate the higher number of undesired harmonics and as a result reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD) much more efficiently, the degrees of freedom must be increased. This means that the number of switching angles gets more and as a result, the problem gets more intricate. As the number of switching angles increases, using either traditional iterative techniques or resultant theory method gets useless. So, in this paper, SHE is treated as an optimization problem where Teaching–Learning-Based Optimization algorithm (TLBO) is found as an efficient tool to solve it. The provided experimental and simulation results of a 7-level multi-level inverter validate the efficiency and practicability of the implemented scheme.

Microgrids as the "building blocks of smart grids"are predicted to play a major role in the future, as they are capable of improving the technical, environmental and economic fields in large power systems. This paper proposes a new formulation for the islanded Microgrid reconfiguration in order to improve voltage stability index. The formulated problem is solved using harmony search algorithm. The increasing loadability index of microgrids in the islanding mode is more important than the index of the grid-connected mode due to its operational limitations such as reactive power generation. In addition, this paper presented an improved indicator to estimate the voltage stability margin of islanded microgrid system based on the system's operational constraints both saddle node and limited induced bifurcations, called as cat_VSIIMG. The cat_VSIIMG which is validated by verified CPF method for IMGs is called the maximum load ability margin of IMG, . Performance and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated on 33-bus test system. The results show that the implementation of appropriate IMG reconfiguration problem formulations will facilitate a successful integration of the microgrid concept in power systems.

There is a great resolution calling for smart grids in recent years. Introduction of new technologies, that make the network flexible and controllable, is a main part of smart grid concept and a key factor to its success. Transmission network as a part of system network has drawn less attention. Transmission switching as a transmission service can release us from load shedding and remove the constraints’ violations.
In addition to removing the congestion and decreasing the system cost, transmission switching may damage generating units due to transient states in instance of reconfiguration. Therefore, in optimal transmission switching, the system security, practical limitations and possible damages should be considered.
Considering dynamic constraints in proposed model avoid the occurrence of transient instability when opening the line in transmission switching action.
A network reduction method based on modified Jacobean AC Newton-Raphson technique power flow considering switchable line in technique is used for speeding up the calculation, efficiency and simplicity.
An approach for selecting the best lines in switching operation in the network is proposed. Based upon this approach, the lines with the highest effect on cost reduction are considered as the candidate switchable line.
To investigate the efficiency of the proposed strategy IEEE 57 bus test system is studied.

Active techniques based on the switched-capacitor converters (SCCs) are used in recent years widely for battery cell balancing applications, due to lack of bulky magnetic components. In addition, these converters are easily be integrated to reduce the volume. Despite of all these benefits, SCCs have some disadvantages such as number of active switches, currents spikes, low balancing speed, and high switching losses. In this paper, a chain resonant SCC is analyzed which can realize soft switching under the ZCS conditions to eliminate currents spikes to overcome the aforementioned SCCs drawbacks. Also, it has been modified to increase balancing speed of the Lithium-Ion battery cells. Then, a chain resonant SCC for balancing a combination of three battery cells with capacity of 2150 mAh and nominal voltage of 3.6 V has been simulated by MATLAB/SIMULINK and it has been implemented at 50 kHz to confirm operation of the converter. The simulation and experimental results are in good agreement with the given mathematical analyses and illustrate that the balancing speed has been improved more than three-fold, as compared with the conventional converter.

Transmission network expansion planning is a challenging problem with the aim to determine the type, location, and time of the equipment to be added to the existing transmission network in order to desirably meet the increasing load demand. On the other hand, reactive power sources are the other important components of the power system, which are used improve voltage profile and maintain the system stability. This paper, presents a comprehensive AC load flow based framework for concurrent expansion planning of transmission networks and reactive power resources. Although major advances have been made in optimization techniques, finding an optimal solution to a problem of this nature is still challenging. Using some linearization techniques, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model for transmission expansion and reactive power planning is proposed. In order to show the influence of the concurrent transmission network expansion and reactive power resources planning in reducing investment costs, simulation studies and analysis of the numerical results are carried out on the Garver 6-Bus and the standard IEEE 24-bus test system.
