  • Understanding Wahhabis' Methodology of Excommunicating Other Muslims (Takfir)
    Rahim Saboor * Pages 29-49
Wahhabis apply different methodologies to accuse people of heresy. Since it is essential to examine and criticize these methods, before all else we need to know them. The objective of this research is to determine Wahhabis methodologies of Takfiris. Examining Takfiri Wahhabis' beliefs, the researcher discovered several of their methods of excommunicating people, which include: relying on the literal meaning of the religious texts rather than the esoteric interpretation, adopting Salafism which means an excessive and dogmatic method of following the opinions of the first three centuries' Predecessors (Salaf), overlooking the authenticity of religious texts, excommunicating people of opposite beliefs and accepting people of the same beliefs as Muslims and pretending a fake consensus in order to excommunicate, calumniate and accuse people.

  • The History of Salafist Thought in the Indian Peninsula from the Twelfth to the Thirteenth Century AH
Ali Molla Musa Meibodi * Pages 51-70

Although historic evidence indicates that some disciples of Ibn Taymiyyah entered India from the eighth century AH, they failed to institutionalize Salafist thoughts in that land. Salafism emerged as a thought movement in Shah Waliullah Dehlawi’s period. Dehlawi travelled to Hejaz and after meeting some Salafist figures there, through them, he became familiar with Ibn Taymiyyah Harrani’s thoughts and opinions and took them to India. They benefited from Ibn Taymiyyah’s thoughts in Shah Waliullah Dehlawi School. After Shah Waliullah, his sons and disciples continued promoting his school of thought to the extent that in the thirteenth century AH, his thoughts were so developed that they abandoned imitation from the Four Imams and practically called themselves non-imitators and Salafi. Moreover, in this century we witness introduction of the Zeidi-Salafi movement into the Indian Peninsula by Seddigh Hasan Khan and its dissemination across the peninsula.

  • An Examination on the Subject of Hearing of the Dead from Deobandi’s Viewpoint
    Mostafa Ghafoori * Pages 71-89
Although since the early Islam there have constantly been disagreement about the subject of the dead’s capability of hearing, the majority of scholars of different Islamic sects have admitted that the dead are capable of hearing, many Hanafis being among them as well; whereas some others have rejected the idea. To substantiate their claim, those with opposite stance rely on some verses of the Quran and a tradition narrated by Aisha; while the advocates of the idea rely on traditions such as the Hadith of Ghulaib Badr and the Hadith of Ghar Na’al and so on. Among the Deobandis, most of their scholars have maintained that the dead are capable of hearing, although each person’s range of capability might be different from the others. Some others Deobandis, having adopted an opposite stance, rejected the dead’s capability of hearing; thus were reprimanded for that by Deobandi scholars, inasmuch as they have been cast out of the Deobandi circle and have been called Wahhabis.

  • An Assessment of Ibn Taymiyyah’s View on Rational Goodness and Evil
Seyyed Abolfazl Huseinypoor * Pages 91-108
Rational goodness and evil is one of the most controversial issues among Muslim intellectual circle. The Mu’tazila perceived goodness and evil as rational, while the Asharia believed that they are derived from the sacred law (Sharia). Criticizing both schools of thought, Ibn Taymiyyahh, the pioneer of the Salafists, has made an endeavor to develop a new perspective. He holds that goodness and evil are rational, however, he rejects Mu’tazila’s argumentation; since it results in likening God to human being. On the other hand, he rejects the sacred law as the way of perceiving goodness and evil, considering it as being opposed to reason and tradition. Although Ibn Taymiyyah is of the opinion that goodness and evil are rational, he doesn’t acknowledge some requirements of this opinion, such as its being inherent. By and large, some of Ibn Taymiyyah’s points of view have strong points, while the rest have serious weaknesses both of which are explored in this article.

  • Ibn al-Uthaymeen’s Method in Opposing the Verses of Qur’an That Refer to the Virtue of Ahlulbait (Peace Be upon Them)
    AliAsghar Kamali * Pages 109-128

There are some verses in the Qur’an that, as asserted by many Shiite and Sunnite scholars, refer to the station and virtues of Ahlulbayt (Peace Be upon Them), verses such as the Verse of Mubahala, the Verse of Wilayah, the Verse of Mawadda, the Verse of Tabligh and the Verse of Shara. Ibn al-Uthaymeen has adopted different ways to oppose these kinds of verses. He has discussed several verses which are confirmed by Sunnite scholars to be referring to Ahlulbayt’s virtuous traits. He has either denied the verses’ cause of revelation or haven’t mentioned it at all; or, if he has, he has undermined its validity. He treats the traditions narrated about Ahlulbayt’s virtues the same way. As such, he has either saved himself the burden of mentioning traditions narrated to confirm these kind of verses or has denounced them as being forged. In other cases, Ibn al-Uthaymeen has tried to generalize the virtue and by pretending that the scholars have given too many comments on the given verse, he attempts to divest the virtue of its exclusive quality. The present article explores Ibn al-Uthaymeen’s methods of treating Quranic verses referring to the virtues of Ahlulbayt.
