    Background
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a common metabolic disease caused by insulin secretion defects, which is associated with a variety of complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy..
    Objectives
Regarding the relationship between type 2 diabetes and hereditary chromatists, we conducted a genetic analysis on two previously reported mutations C282Y and H63D related to the HFE gene in our population..Patients and
    Methods
Altogether, 145 patients with type 2 diabetes and 145 healthy controls were examined. A genotyping assay performed using electrophoresis of the DNA digestion products from MboI and RsaI for H63D and C282Y, respectively..
    Results
Results showed a significant difference between case and controls regarding C282Y (P value < 0.001) and H63D genotypes (P value = 0.013). We also found a relationship between both mutations and nephropathy. Moreover, the difference between C282Y genotypes of patients with retinopathy and healthy controls were statistically significant (P value = 0.020) while there was no association between H63D and retinopathy. In addition, observed differences of both mutations were significant when nephropathic patients compared to the controls..
    Conclusions
Our study showed a significant association between H63D and C282Y mutations and the risk of type 2 diabetes in Iranian population..

    Background
Intestinal parasitic infections are one of major health problems, especially in developing countries. Several factors, such as geographical location and socioeconomic conditions, are responsible for variations in the prevalence of intestinal parasites. Baghmalek is an area in Khuzestan, a western province of Iran. This area has a mild climate and is a touristic region of the province..
    Objectives
The aim of our study was to describe the occurrence of intestinal parasitic infections in Baghmalek city, southwest of Iran..Patients and
    Methods
The study was carried out from October 2013 to October 2014. A total of 8469 human stool samples were examined by microscopy methods. Separation of samples, based on age, sex and season was done and data were analyzed with the SPSS software..
    Results
Totally, 1131 (13.35%) samples were positive for intestinal parasites. It was found that prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections was higher in males than in females. The greatest prevalence (45%) was in the group of the under 15 years old and the prevalence rate of intestinal parasites infection was higher in summer (18.53%) compared to seasons (P < 0.05)..
    Conclusions
Because the intestinal parasitic infections are a health concern in areas with poor nutritional and socioeconomic status, intervention programs, including health education and environmental sanitation, are required..

Context: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease accompanied by physical disabilities and a number of co-morbidities; it leads to remarkable economic burden, reduced productivity, and deteriorated quality of life (QOL)..
    Objectives
The current study aimed to provide a clear view of quality of life among the Iranian patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis through a systematic review..Data Sources: The current study was conducted as a systematic literature review on the articles published from 2000 to 2013 in data bases such as: Google scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, IRANDOC, SID and Medlib and by keywords: quality of life, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Iran and, their Persian equivalents..Study Selection: Finally, 10 articles were selected out of the 2065 assessed ones..Data Extraction: In the first step, the extracted results were summarized in the extraction table, and then analyzed using the Forest plot..
    Results
Based on the Forest plot, six studies on the quality-of-life, met the inclusion criteria. Total QOL score was 47.5. In the reviewed articles (n = 10), different variables and factors were reported to affect the QOL in patients with RA. The most important factors affecting QOL were demographic factors, depression, and complications of RA, etc..
    Conclusions
Due to the chronic nature of RA, promoting the QOL and adherence to therapies could be achieved through convincing the patients. Therefore, identification of weak points and planning for them at all levels; from individual to the community level is suggested..

    Introduction
Although meningioma is the most common non-glial tumor of intracranial space, primary extra cranial meningioma is rare and comprises less than 2% of all meningioma..
    Case Presentation
We report a case of slowly progressing extracranial meningioma that was presented in a young adult woman. The tumor was asymptomatic but large enough to cause cosmetic discomfort. Patient underwent successful and complete surgical resection of her tumor and eventually fully recovered..
    Conclusions
Primary Extracranial Meningiomas (PEMs) without intracranial origin are very rare and because of their slow growing nature are initially managed by primary care physicians..

    Background
Atherosclerosis is the main cause of cardiovascular diseases, and its risk enhances in type 2 diabetes mellitus..
    Objectives
This study aimed to evaluate Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT) by carotid artery ultrasonography and assess its correlation with microalbuminuria and estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus..Patients and
    Methods
This cross-sectional study was included 205 patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). We recorded clinical and biochemical data such as FBS, lipid profile, and urinary albumin. Intima-media thickness of carotid arteries was measured in all patients by high frequency ultrasound..
    Results
In simple correlation coefficients analysis, CIMT was significantly associated with total cholesterol (r = 0.197, P = 0.008), serum creatinine (r = 0.240, P = 0.001), and urinary albumin (r = 0.420, P = 0.000). Also, CIMT elevated significantly with the stage progression of chronic kidney disease (0.67 ± 0.15 mm in stage 1, 0.73 ± 0.22 mm in stage 2, and 0.82 ± 0.21 mm in stage 3) (P value = 0.024). In multivariate linear regression analysis, the duration of diabetes, weight, HDL, serum creatinine, urinary albumin, and estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) were independently associated with CIMT (P value < 0.05 for all)..
    Conclusions
Our study shows a relationship between CIMT and renal parameters, including eGFR and albuminuria. This study confirms the importance of intensive examinations for early detection of atherosclerosis and treatment of risk factors..

    Background
Low Back Pain (LBP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder in the different societies..
    Objectives
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the side-lying endurance test and ultrasound thickness measurement of the anterolateral abdominal muscles..Patients and
    Methods
A convenience sample of 55 subjects, aged 20 - 30 years, participated in this study. Endurance of abdominal muscles was measured using side-lying endurance test in all subjects. Ultrasound thickness measurement for the Transverses Abdominis (TVA), Internal Oblique (IO), and External Oblique (EO) muscles was performed on the right side at rest in supine position..
    Results
The results of the Pearson correlation coefficient between the variables of the study showed no significant relationship between the side-lying endurance test and ultrasound thickness measurements of TVA (r = 0.06, P = 0.65), IO (r = 0.06, P = 0.62), and EO (r = 0.08, P = 0.54) muscles. The significance level of 0.05 was chosen..
    Conclusions
It seems that there is no significant relationship between the side-lying endurance test and abdominal muscles thickness..

    Background
Drooling is an annoying problem in some neurologic and systemic diseases. Injecting botulinum toxin in the salivary glands is one of the most effective and safest treatments..
    Objectives
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of botulinum toxin on the amount of sialorrhea in patients with neurologic diseases..
    Materials And Methods
This study included ten patients and 60 units of botulinum toxin type A (Dysport) were injected in any submandibular gland and 120 units were injected in any parotid gland bilaterally under the ultrasonographic guide. To check drooling, daily consumption of tissue was counted and it was cheeked once before injection and at six, 12, 18, and 24 weeks after injection; then the results were compared..
    Results
In this study, the effect of Dysport on the amount of drooling of the participants at the sixth, 12th, and 18th weeks after treatment was significantly decreased (P value of 0.00016, 0.0001, and 0.00011, respectively). However, after 24 weeks, this difference was not significant (P value = 0.15)..
    Conclusions
These finding showed that Dysport can be significantly effective in reducing the amount of saliva for 18 weeks..

    Background
Investigating severe maternal morbidity/near miss is a newly recognized tool which identifies women at the highest risk of maternal death and helps allocate resources, especially in developing countries..
    Objectives
This study aimed to document the prevalence and causes of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) at two educational hospitals in Ahvaz, Khuzestan, Iran..Patients and
    Methods
In this prospective study, we found and selected SMM patients based on organ failure criteria from patients admitted in two educational hospitals of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences during 2009 - 2010. Until recovery discharge or death, the diagnosis and management of these patients were under observation of obstetricians. The main outcome was maternal mortality ratio, SMM rate (SMMR)..
    Results
Totally, there were 12,149 deliveries, eight maternal deaths and 226 SMM cases. This study showed the SMMR of 18.6/1000 live births, an MMR of 65.8/100000 live births, and case fatality ratio of 1/28 or 3.5%. Severe preeclampsia and hemolysis elevated liver enzymes low platelet count syndrome (HELLP) (38%), hemorrhage (23%) and ectopic pregnancy (14%) were the top causes of SMM. Similar to HELLP syndrome (25%) hemorrhage (25%), sepsis (25%) was the commonest cause of mortality; 39% of patients were referred from primary or secondary health care units; 85% of the cases needed intensive care unit admissions..
    Conclusions
SMM analysis provides valuable information on obstetric care. This study highlighted the need to improve antenatal care, which would help early identification of high-risk pregnancies. Every SMM could progress to maternal mortality if is not suspected, diagnosed and managed on its golden time..
