(The Qur'an: An Encyclopedia)

The Holy Qurʾān is the divinely revealed scripture of the Muslims which is distinct from other holy books due to its eternal nature. Even now, with the passage of centuries, this heavenly scripture continues to prove its eternal nature and ability to be a guidance for all mankind. In the present study, we examine the views of Western scholars (Orientalists) on the eternal nature of the Qurʾān and critique them with the aim of attesting this very issue. Initially, the statements of some Western scholars who explicitly endorse the eternal nature of this holy book are presented. Then, the features of the Qurʾān which necessitate its eternal nature are stated and following each attribute, the opinions of some opponents are mentioned before being critiqued using established evidence. The methodology employed in this research is descriptive-analytical.

The compilation of encyclopedias about Qurʾānic sciences and subjects related to it has been one of the approaches undertaken by Orientalists and non-Muslim scholars [of Islam] in contemporary times. The Qurʾān: An Encyclopedia, edited by Oliver Leaman, a professor of philosophy at the University of Kentucky (USA) who specializes in Islamic and medieval Jewish philosophy, is one such example. One of the important subjects addressed by this scholar is that of the inimitability or matchlessness of the Qurʾān. The subject of the miraculous nature of the Qurʾān has been raised in several entries in this encyclopedia, including the entry on the inimitability of the Qurʾān, Qurʾānic studies, the miraculous nature of the Qurʾān, and the Qurʾān and language. However, the main discussion on this subject is presented in the entry on ‘inimitability’ [of the Qurʾān] by Stefan Wild (pp. 295-6). Despite a number of praiseworthy points such as fluency and simplicity etc., the discourse on the Qurʾān’s inimitability in this encyclopedia contains some claims and issues that need further review and study. Some of these include: the history of the oral and written discussions on the inimitability [of the Qurʾān]; the challenge of the Qurʾān and [specifically] the claim that it challenges anyone to bring a single verse like the Qurʾān; belief in the inimitability of the Qurʾān and its comparison to the belief of the People of the Book in the inimitability of the Bible; the attacks and doubts raised by some Orientalists and the answers to these in defense of the inimitability of the Qurʾān, and the discussions on this issue in the last century.

From the outset, Orientalists expended great efforts to destroy the image of Islam and the Qurʾān, which was motivated by a number of goals including propaganda, colonial designs, scientific and economic subjugation etc. However, it was only after the uprising of the Sudanese Mahdi against the Egyptian and British armies that a movement was formed wherein certain orientalists, such as Darmstetter, portrayed the concept of Mahdiism as mere mythology and part of Islamic Messianism, while individuals such as Henry Corbin and Van Fluaton propounded the concept of Mahdism from the standpoint of Shīʿī Islam. This article critically reviews these different perspectives. In this paper, an analytical-descriptive method is employed and resources are collected and studied from available written sources.

Understanding the language of any text is one of the ways in which the text is appreciated and interpreted, and as one of the well-known linguists, Izutsu propounds the intricacies of this method. He attempts the application of various methods of linguistics and semiotic analysis to Qurʾānic studies, but his semantic approach has not been studied and has mostly been neglected. This article adopts an analytical approach with the aim of examining Izutsu’s semantics along with the strengths of this method and the potential influences it may have in the methodology of Qurʾānic studies. However, we note that lack of specific criteria and standards in the selection of keywords, identifying the etymology of words, arriving at the semantics of meaning and understanding their applications are the weak points of his approach.

Scholars and exegetes of the Qurʾān have focused on the Qurʾān from various perspectives, including its literary dimension. In the early centuries, this approach was limited to the literary sciences of morphology, syntax and elocution, but in the contemporary era, it is a combination of these sciences and new sciences that look at the text of the Qurʾān differently. Some of the modern Muslim scholars such as Amin al-Khuli and his wife Bint al-Shati, Nasr Hamed Abu Zayd and Mohammed Arkoun have, with the aim of updating the message of the Qurʾān and answering contemporary challenges, adopted the literary methodology of the West, such as linguistics and semiotics, and by employing peripheral and internal analysis, they have sought to address the historical, psychological and sociological connotations of the religious text. They treat the Qurʾān as a work of literary art which must be interpreted using the latest literary research methods in the context of its historical exegesis. Of course, they went astray and fell into deviations in this regard. In this article, while describing the general views of the founders of this [modern] literary method, we focus on the views of Arkoun and his opinion about how the Qurʾān was eventually transformed into a book like the Bible, and how the Qurʾān’s composition was influenced by its historical context and the prevailing social and political atmosphere of the community at that time. We subsequently proceed to critique his views and arrive at the conclusion that the text of the Qurʾān is not of human provenance written under the influence of the thoughts of its authors and the prevailing culture of the time; rather, its words are direct divine revelation, written at the time of the Prophet (s) without any change in content or meaning.

The present paper examines and critiques Arthur Jeffery’s book The Foreign Vocabulary of the Qurʾān with a focus on Hebrew vocabulary in three parts. First, we give a brief overview of Arthur Jeffrey’s scholarly contributions and summarize his standing in society. Then we recount several short observations about his work and, with a brief look at the relevant verses, examine the foreign terms used in the Qurʾān from the viewpoint of exegetes and the lexicographers. Subsequently, after having identified the points of divergence, we discuss the phenomenon of foreign vocabulary and its importation and borrowing from other languages as an introduction to the subject of our study. The main reasons and factors for the presence of foreign vocabulary the Qurʾān makes up another part of this study. In the final section, while reviewing the 40-page preface by Arthur Jeffrey in his book, we critically review the classification of words by Arthur Jeffrey in this chapter, and then look at some of the words that the author did not address. In the end, we present a critical appraisal of the words that Arthur Jeffrey claims were taken from Jewish, Hebrew sources.
