A look at the entry "Quran" in the Encyclopedia of Islam, published by Leiden, reveals its author's lack of familiarity with and information about Islam and the Quran. Moreover, the article text that is written by Alford T. Welch implies that he has a presupposition toward the Quran, i.e. the Quran was revealed only during the first 20 years of the prophetic mission of the Holy Prophet of Islam (s). He has developed this assumption in all his discussions, and regarding every topic, he has tried to prove the presupposition that there has been an evolution in thoughts and beliefs in the Quran. He has even considered the vocabulary of the Quran, the content of the verses, the canonic rules, the manner of presentation, and the expressions of the Quran to follow a kind of evolution. Regarding the dating of the Quranic verses, he seems to be a follower of Richard Bell School. The consequence of his presupposition is that there had never been such a thing as an all-at-once revelation of the Quran to the heart of the Prophet of Islam (s), a view that is against the viewpoint of many Islamic scholars.

In the present article, the German translations of the Noble Quran along with their evolution process have been examined. After presentation of a brief history of translating the Quran into German and introduction of some translators who provided the German translations of the Quran, a list of the German translations of the Quran along with details such as the religion and religious sect of the translator, the publication data and place, and the publisher have been presented. Then, based on a categorization of the German translations of the Quran according to the translator's religious sect and the scientific growth, the translations of some verses of the Quran are examined in the light of the translator's religious sect.

Part of the entry "Muhammad (s)", entitled "the scope of the prophetic mission" has addressed the scope of the Holy Mohammad's (s) prophetic mission. In addition to quoting some Quranic verses that in the Rubin’s view imply the local scope of the Prophet's mission (i.e. Arab's area only), he has also referred to some verses that imply the universality of Mohammad's (s) mission, and has left this paradoxical specification without any clear assertion. However, in another part of the same entry entitled as "Ibrahim's religion", Rubin has preferred the locality of the Prophet Mohammad’s (s) mission. In this study, the verses that Rubin deems as implying the locality of the Prophet's (s) mission are examined, and consequently, it has been proved these verses by no mean imply locality of the Prophet's (s) mission.

Ignaz Goldziher is an Orientalist who has challenged the Muslim, and especially the Shia, beliefs in his studies and has tried to accuse Shia of believing in the corruption of the present-day manuscript of the Quran. In his discussion of some issues in the Quranic sciences domain, such as collection and compilation of the Quran, occasions of Revelation, etc. he has had a prejudiced stance toward the Shia. The reason is that in most of his studies, Goldziher has extracted what he presented as Shia viewpoints from the books considered invalid by the Shia, or even from the resources that are against Shia. In the present study, we have tried to present the viewpoints of Goldziher in the Quranic sciences domain, criticize them based on traditions and other evidences, and prove the groundlessness of his viewpoints.

In Muslim's view, the text of the Quran has not lost its authority and authenticity during the time, and has not experienced any corruption. Some historical records present context that seemingly imply the addition or deletion corruptions in the Quran. These are invalid based on the tradition analysis rules and the Islamic Law principles. Even if they were congruent with the reality, they would be considered as stemming from sectarian motivations and biased judgments. In the Orientalist's view, too, the difference in methods and motivations has led to emergence of stances for and against the Quran corruption issue. A deep analysis and comparison of these two stances reveal that the evidences relied on by the Orientalists who believe in the corruption (including addition, deletion, displacement, and difference in Readings) are from invalid resources and untrue historical reports. These evidences are used to create doubts and bring about conflicts among different groups of Muslims. On the contrary, the Orientalists who believe in the non-corruption of the Quran have tried to satiate their inclination for query and truth. In this vein, they have paid due attention to the historical processes of the collection and compilation of the written manuscript of the Quran. While refraining from attribution of false charges and accusations, they have criticized the methods of analysis used by the pro-corruption Orientalists, and at the same time, they have provided reasons that support the authenticity and inviolability of the Quran text.

The marriage of the Prophet (s) to Zaynab bint Jahsh and its consequences for the concept of adoption reveal the importance of addressing this issue in the light of human rights. The entry "children" in the Encyclopedia of Quran has made concise references to this issue. Although this entry has not presented any untrue stance, its incomplete presentation of the issue may lead the reader to faulty conclusions. The writer of the entry has made true references that are presented without any analysis – which is common in the encyclopedic articles. However, due to a certain bias, the article presents the Quran as having a prejudiced view toward male and female children, without explaining the possible reasons behind this stance of the Quran. Therefore, the reader is led to the conclusion that the male is more valuable than the female. Lack of a true specification of the logical relationship between the marriage of the Prophet (s) and abrogation of the Days of Ignorance adoption rules, provision of incomplete information about the verses related to the gender, and untrue interpretation of the superiority of the male over the female are the main criticisms against this entry that are addressed in this article in the light of the related Quranic interpretations.
