This study examined the effects of individual difference (ID) factors on changing pragmatic abilities among L2 learners of English. Participants were 48 Japanese EFL students in an English-medium university in Japan. They completed a pragmatic speaking test (k=12) that assessed their ability to produce two speech acts: requests and opinions، in high- and low-imposition situations. The measure was given three times during one academic year. Speech acts were evaluated for appropriateness and fluency. Three ID factors (proficiency، orientation towards English study، and lexical access skill) were measured، and their effects on changes in appropriateness and fluency of speech act production were assessed. Results revealed significant effects of individual factors on pragmatic change، but the effects appeared differently between appropriateness and fluency.

This qualitative study investigates the uses of be in Contemporary English. Based on this study، one easy claim and one more difficult claim are proposed. The easy claim is that the traditional distinction between be as a lexical verb and be as an auxiliary is faulty. In particular، ''copular-be''، traditionally considered to be a lexical verb، is in fact a prototypical auxiliary. The harder claim is that there is a syntactic distinction between lexical-be and auxiliary-be، but that distinction does not coincide with the copular vs. non-copular usages. Rather، the syntactic distinction between lexical and auxiliary be has an entirely different، semantic motivation based on stativity vs. activity. In the process of providing evidence for these claims، the paper challenges a major assumption of traditional grammar – namely that every English sentence requires a lexical verb. This assumption is replaced by the notion that every English sentence requires Inflection. The proposals in this paper bridge the gap between theoretical and applied linguistics and have the potential to simplify significantly the conceptualization، teaching and learning of English grammar.

Following Swales’s (1981) works on genre analysis، studies on different sections of Research Articles (RAs) in various languages and fields abound; however، only scant attention has been directed toward abstracts written in Persian، and in the field of literature. Moreover، claims made by Lores (2004) regarding the correspondence of two types of abstracts with different models، and by Martin (2004) concerning the influence of sociocultural factors on the way writers write needed evaluation. To fill this gap، 90 English and Persian abstracts written in the field of literature، by English and Persian native speakers، were analyzed based on the IMRD (Introduction، Method، Results، and Discussion) and CARS (Create A Research Space) models. The results demonstrated that literature RA writers generally focus on Introduction and Results، neglect Method and Discussion، and do not mention the niche in previous related work; secondly، although none of the models were efficient، literature abstracts generally matched CARS more than IMRD; and thirdly، abstracts written by Persian native speakers had minor deviations from both the Persian and the international norms، and exhibited a standard of their own. The present study also discusses steps which the models fail to predict. In addition، it offers a number of pedagogical implications for TEFL، especially for the writing skill.

This study investigated the effects of captioned texts on second/foreign (L2) listening comprehension and vocabulary gains using a computer multimedia program. Additionally، it explored the caption ordering effect (i. e. captions displayed during the first or second listening)، and the interaction of captioning order with the L2 proficiency level of language learners in listening comprehension and vocabulary performance. To these ends، a computer software program was designed and 200 EFL learners (100 high-intermediate and 100 low-intermediate level students) were asked to participate in the experiment. They were randomly assigned into four groups: captioned (listening to texts twice with captions)، noncaptioned (listening to texts twice without captions)، first captioned (listening to texts first with captions and then without captions)، and second captioned (listening to texts first without captions and then with captions) groups. They listened to four audio texts (i. e. short stories) twice and took the listening and vocabulary tests، administered through the software. Results from t-tests and two-way ANOVAs showed that the captioned stories were more effective than the non-captioned ones. Moreover، the caption ordering had no significant effect on the participants'' L2 listening comprehension and vocabulary performance. Finally، L2 proficiency level differences did not affect performance derived from caption ordering.

As mobile learning simultaneously employs both handheld computers and mobile telephones and other devices that draw on the same set of functionalities، it throws open the door for swift connection between learners and teachers. This study examined and articulated the impact of the application of mobile devices for teaching English vocabulary items to 123 Iranian semi-illiterates (70 female، and 53 male learners، aging 35-55) who passed the transition course، namely، the fifth grade in Iran''s literacy movement organization centers of five counties around Isfahan. It was intended to see if the way of presenting materials and guidelines (formal vs. informal) through cell-phone had any significant connection with their performance. To those ends، after five weeks learning of 36 new English vocabulary items in non-formal mode of delivery، they participated in a testing phase comprised of three sub-tests. The results showed that compared against superseded counterparts، the succinct nature of today''s short message service (SMS) texts allows for a more successful application of informal style of language in the realm of teaching English to semi-illiterate citizens. It was also found that annotated materials led into outperformance of the semi-illiterates.

According to a basic prediction made by the Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM)، at early stages of language acquisition، strong L2-L1 lexical links are formed. RHM predicts that these links weaken with increasing proficiency، although they do not disappear even at higher levels of language development. To test this prediction، two groups of highly proficient and two groups of elementary L2 learners were tested on noncognate stimuli with episodic recognition tasks in both forward (L1-L2) and backward (L2-L1) directions. The pattern observed for the elementary L2 learners in both directions was consistent with the prediction of the RHM. The results showed the existence of strong lexical links in the backward direction at the elementary level but no such links were found in the forward direction. Contrary to the predictions of the RHM، however، L2-L1 lexical links are lost at higher levels of proficiency.

This study describes working memory and developing and validating of an L1 Persian reading span test for the measurement of working memory of L1 Persian EFL learners. The test، which included 64 Persian sentences، was developed based on Daneman and Carpenter’s (1980) reading span test. The shortcomings of the test were identified and removed over three pilot studies on 74 participants. The final test was used in a study with 140 participants at three different proficiency levels. The results of an item analysis، as indicated by Cronbach’s Alpha، displayed an internal reliability of. 844 and. 790 for the RST processing and recall scores respectively. This suggests that the newly developed test is reliable enough and could be used to measure working memory capacity for future L2 studies. This study also provides a clear procedure for the development of a reading span test for speakers of other languages.

The usefulness of teaching pronunciation in language instruction remains controversial. Though past research suggests that teachers can make little or no difference in improving their students’ pronunciation، current findings suggest that second language pronunciation can improve to be near native-like with the implementation of certain criteria such as the utilization of prosodic elements. With the emphasis on meaningful communication and the understanding that speech production is affected by speech perception، there is a need to integrate prosodics with communicative activities providing situations to develop student pronunciation through listening and speaking. This short overview examines such elements.

Learners are often reported not to be motivated enough to attend to teacher feedback. Teachers also tend to grade learners’ writing samples when providing them with corrective feedback though they know it may divert their attention away from teacher feedback. However، not grading learner writings does not seem to be an option due to both learners’ demands for it and institutional regulations that require teachers to have summative evaluation. In order to overcome such contradictions، a new technique called Draft-Specific Scoring (DSS) was devised in order to use grading as a motivating، rather than demotivating، device in order to encourage learners to attend to teacher feedback and apply it to their first drafts to improve the quality of their writing accordingly. DSS is a grading system in which learners can improve their received grade by applying teacher feedback to their writing samples in order to improve its quality. The score they receive will improve as a result of the improvement in the quality of the revisions they make. They have two opportunities to go through this procedure. Their final score will be the mean score of all the grades they receive in their last drafts submitted. This experimental study was an attempt to check the effect of the use of this technique in error feedback provision on three measures of fluency، grammatical complexity، and accuracy. The results showed that DSS could help learners improve in all three measures while the control group receiving only error feedback without DSS could only improve in fluency.
