Establishment of Safavid dynasty, with the backing of Imamate Shiism, paved the way for the expansion and recognition of this religious sect in Iran. Meanwhile, theattitudesheld byShiitereligious scholars (Ulama)towards the issue of kingshipduring the age of the occult Imam were of great importance. In other words, the issue of politicaland religious legitimacy of the Safavid kings wasamong the focal issues taken into consideration by theShiitereligious scholars in this time. In some occasions, such debatesled to protests and movements against the Safavid government. The main goal of this article is studying the underlying ideological and intellectual causes of these protests and movements. Despite the existence of a bulk of research on interactions between the religious scholarsandthe Safavids, the present issue has remained unstudied. The research method adopted by this study is content analysis of Safavid sources and itineraries written by the Europeans in that historical period.

The emergence of Safivid Dynasty and its recognition of Shiite as the legitimate religion of the country was a new period in the history of Iran. Inappropriate religious extremism by Shah Ismail and his son, Tahmasb, led to radical reactions on the part of the Ottomans and Uzbeks in the East and West of the country. It also resulted intheir political and military interactions against Safavid state. Furthermore, blocking the linking roads of these two states by Iran caused many commercial and transportation problemsfor pilgrims from Transoceanic and India on their way to Mecca. The expansionary aims of the Ottomans in the East and their claim for exerting dominance on the world of Islam along with the issuance of harsh Islamic decrees by their Islamic leaders against theGhezelbashs were among thesignificant factors that made Uzbek leaders and Ottomans’ coalition against Safavids possible. The existing documents and correspondence exchanged between the Ottomans and Uzbeks indicate great political and militaryinteractions between them. The documents reveal that Ottomans were involved in training the Uzbek forces and equipping them with guns and rifles againstSafavid Dynasty. Some Uzbek leaders who were well aware of the importance of military readiness corresponded with the Ottomans, requesting that Yenicheri soldiers be sent for training and mobilizing their forces. The present study aims at investigating the objectives followed by these states throughsuch interactions against the Safavids and the consequences especially in Khorassan area in the early Safavid period.

The imprudence of Kharazmshahian in interacting with their neighbors and the Caliphate speeded the conquests of the Mongols, and paved the way for their invasion of Iran. However, the existing religious conflicts among Iranians were among the factors which led to stabilization of Mongol’s government in Iran. Half a century after the establishment of Mongol’s government in Iran, Hulaguwas given the mission to beseech troops to the west. Doubtlessly, many factors were at work in this historic event. If Iranians were united and if they had aligned themselves with the government, the conquest would have failed or it would have taken the Mongols more time to establish their government and stabilize it. Furthermore, religion played an influential role in unifying various groups of people, sincepolitical government and religion had always been simultaneously in powerin Iran, and political unity depended on religious unity. This article seeks to study the role of religious conflicts in Iran as an important driving force in beseeching Hulagu’s troops to Iran and continuing his government there. The determined objectives for Hulagu’s beseeching troops to the west indicate that the Mongols aimed at eradicating Muslim’s political and religious centers including Ismaili’s citadels, Abbasid Court and Egypt’s Mamluks. The downfall of the largest spiritual centers of Muslims and Mongol’s domination on Iran endangered all Islam. Only during this period, Muslims (both Shiite and Sunni) united to revive Islam. This unity continued by the time Islam became the state religion in Iran again. Having reached their goal, Muslims resumed their conflicts and religious fights over their superiority, despite the attempts made by Gazan to gain support of different sects of Islam and to reconcile them. Continuation of these religious conflicts after the downfall of Ilkhanate government prevented the establishment of a united, integrated and independent government in Iran. Consequently, local governments with various religious approaches began governing different parts of Iran.

The rebellions of Abdul RahmanIbnAshasand HarithIbn Soryjoccurred with the aim of reacting against the irreligiousness of the Umayyads and establishment of an egalitarian society. The leaders of these two rebellions, despite their shared goals, took advantage of different stratagems to achieve their goals. IbnAshas, through using various strategies, succeeded at gaining advocacyof different groupsof people and by transferring theuprising to Iraq attempted to overthrow the Umayyad Caliphate. On the contrary, the rebellion made by HarithIbnSoryjwas not grounded on his opposition with the Umayyad Caliphate but aimed at reforming their economic and social policies. Although both of these rebellions were suppressed, they could weaken the Umayyads and pave the way for upcoming uprisings and theeventual collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate. In this research, we aim at making comparisons and contrasts between these two uprisings through investigating the driving forces underlying their emergence. Accordingly, understanding the similarities and differences between these rebellions is the main purpose of this study. These two uprisings, despite having common goals and outcomes in the Umayyad era, due to their different social contexts and structures, adopted different revolutionary approaches for achieving their goals.

Cities of Iran, during the seventh century (A.H), enjoyed relative prosperity before their devastation by Mongol invasion. Battles with the nomadic people of Mongol blocked the former growth and prosperity of these cities. Besides destroying the economic basis of big cities, the urban life and civil relations underwent profound changes in the Ilkhanid era.The Ilkhanids, during an era of their governance, practiced a different religion than that of their due subjects. Thereby, institutions that previously hadreligious functions and duties in the society were damaged profoundly. For instance, Hisbahinstitution, which was responsible for enforcing Islamic law, experienced a period of Fetratuntil a MuslimIlkhan was put in charge of it. The period of Fetrat took a long time and reached its end when Gazan Khan converted to Islam. Gazan and his advisor, Khaje Rashid Aldin, tried to enforce the Islamic law and restore the society to its previous status. Therefore, they brought about many reforms and enforced new rules based on Islamic traditions. They made Hisbah responsible for performing such duties. However, the findings of this study show that despite significant supports from the government, especially after the issuance of decrees and regulations, the Hisbah failed to reach remarkable success in implementation of the rules.
