Studies on population dynamics and identification of fruit flies were done in mango and guava orchards at Kahir village (80 km to Chabahar) in 2010-2011, using Macphail pheromone traps baited with a mixture of methyl eugenol and protein hydrolyzate, sugar and technical malathion. Five species, Bactrocera zonata (Saunders), Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel, Dacus (Leptoxyda) persicus Hendel, Dacus (Didacus) ciliatus Loew and Carpomya vesuviana Costa were caught in the traps. Observations showed that Bactrocera zonata was the dominant species and its population was significantly higher than other species. It appears to be a severe pest of these fruits. Generally, flies were caught in higher numbers in guava orchard than in mango orchard. However, the difference was not statistically significant. The fruit flies were present in the field throughout the year. They were caught in the traps in greater numbers from April to August and their population was at the peak in August in both mango and guava orchards, then population decline continued until February. Effect of climatic factors on the population of fruit flies also showed that temperature and Relative humidity have no effect on population fluctuation. Availability of host fruits was essential factor affecting population fluctuation.

Prey preference of natural enemies is one of the phenomena that should be considered to study the efficiency of natural enemies. When the predator has a choice between two or more preys, they often show preference for one of them. Two species of aphids, Brevicoryne brassicae and Lipaphis erysimi, could cause serious damage on crusiferan plants. Hippodamia variegata is one of the main predator of these aphids. This experiment was conducted to determine the feeding preference of fourth instar larvae of ladybeetle, H. variegata on two mentioned aphids species. Experiment was done in Petridishes containing Canola leaves for 24 hours. In this study, prey-preference of H. variegata was tested on canola plants at laboratory conditions (25±1°C, 70±10% RH, and 16:8 L:D Photoperiod). They were observed after 24 h to record the number of surviving aphids from each type of prey. Predator preference was analyzed using the Manly’s index of preference. Results showed that the forth instar larva ate 70.4±5.13 L. erysimi and 60.25±4.39 B. brassicae during the test time. Based on collected data, preference index were 0.592 and 0.408 on L. erysimi and B. brassicae, respectively. In switching experiment, five different densities of the two aphid species were offered to the predator and result showed that all the ratios of L. erysimi and B. brassicae had no effect on the preference of forth instar larvae of ladybeetle H. variegata.

Citrus Greening disease is one of the most serious diseases in the world, which has recently been reported from some parts of Iran. Due to the presence of its vector, Diaphorina citri, in our country, study on the vector is essential. In order to identify the host species and population dynamism of Asian Citrus Psylla on different hosts, three citrus orchards of the same condition, each with three cultivars in Kerman, Hormozgan and Baluchestan provinces were selected. Ten selected trees of each cultivar and weeds were sampled every two weeks and collected insects were selected. The yellow sticky traps to capture adult was installed every other one in orchards. The mean number of psylla per tree on lemon were calculated 15.47±12.55, 11.49 ±1.11and 8.48±2.75 psylla in Baluchestan, Jiroft and Hormozgan, respectively and lemon is preferred host of this pest. Diagrams drawn from data showed that the insect population often increased in early March but the peak of population, depending on weather condition and time of bud formation of trees in each region is different. Population peak time is from late April to mid-May and late September in Jiroft, March, Late May and early June in Baluchistan and in March and April in Hormozgan. As a result, the control time in any studied region is different according to population peak time.

Essential oil of Rosmarinus officinalis was investigated on toxicity and physiological aspect of elm leaf beetle Xanthogaleruca luteola Mull. for 3rd instar larvae and adults in controlled condition (25 ± 2 °C; 14:10LD; 65% RH). LC50 were estimated 2.55 and 1.11 for 3rd instar larvae and adults respectively. The effect of LC50 dose on remaining insects were investigated on nutritional indices. Results indicated that the relative consumption rate (RCR), relative growth rate (RGR), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) in 3rd larvae were reduced compared with the controls. The essential oil reduced cholesterol, urea and uric acid compared with the controls in 3rd larvae. However, LDH and glucose showed no significant differences with the controls. In adults the glucose was increased after treatment. These results indicate that this plant has the potential for controlling this important insect pest.
