A Contemplation on UAE's Territorialization in Persian Gulf
Author(s):
Abstract:
Territorialization is one of the key concepts of political geography. In recent years, the United Arab Emirates has taken measures to expand its territory in Persian Gulf. Construction of artificial islands, often on Dubai coasts was the first step. The other action was defining the points of straight baselines on some part of Abu Dhabi coasts in 2009. Through descriptive - analytical methods and by using legal documents submitted to the United Nations, this paper tries to examine UAE’s territorialization in Persian Gulf and draw the map by ARCGIS software. The results of the cartographic analysis of these territorializations indicate that a significant level of waters behind the UAE’s baseline was considered as domestic water and its territorial sea and other territories have been advanced either. These kinds of measures led to environmental, legal, territorial and security impacts which have been discussed in this paper.
