Improving Traffic Safety using Speed Bumps Case study: Tehran

Safety improvement in urban road networks plays an important role in transportation network efficiency. One of the most effective parameters in increasing safety is vehicle speed control that causes the improvement of safety for pedestrians and cyclists as well as decreasing the number of severe accidents. Urban planners and traffic engineers benefit from different strategies for traffic calming. In this regard, speed bumps play an important role in reduction of vehicle speed in and around intersections. The present study evaluates the performance of different types of speed bumps (made of plastic and asphalt) used in Tehran and then compares their performance in reducing vehicle speed using the empirical data. Drivers’ reaction facing speed bumps considering their ages has been another part of this research study.
