Appropriate strategies for teaching humanities at universities

Abstract:
university faculty members in Iranian higher education system, especially those from humanities disciplines, lack expertise in the area of instructional design. In fact the regulations governing employment in this system does not place any emphasis on such competencies. Empirical evidence documenting problems with respect to teaching strategies abound which is in harmony with the policies being practiced. One of the necessary steps to alleviate this situation is to articulate innovative models and strategies for teaching especially relevant to the cause of teaching human sciences. This goal has been pursued in this study. The focus on human sciences stems from the exigencies that are twofold. First, the learning goals are more diverse and call for diverse teaching strategies for their attainment. Second, teaching within these disciplines is to a greater extent in line with the traditional mode. In this research an interdisciplinary approach was adopted and the goal of articulating models and strategies was attacked from various disciplinary angles. Therefore, the study was carried out based on the determination of semi independent study modules. The modules representing a different outlook were: philosophical and epistemological, policy analysis, ICT based analysis, existing empirical evidence and life experiences of tenured faculty members.
