Evaluation of the effect of temperature on bleeding duration after tooth extraction

Background
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on bleeding duration after tooth extraction.
Materials And Methods
Five patients who needed tooth extraction from both sides of the jaw were selected for this study. In this clinical trial study, (split mouth), we used sponge gauze soaked in 42◦C saline on one side (experimental side) and simple sponge gauze on the other side of the same patient for compression dressing on gums after tooth extraction and we checked bleeding duration every minute on each side of the jaw after tooth extraction. This procedure was done by the same dentist on 5 patients and 10 samples. Bleeding duration was analyzed by T-test.
Results
Mean age of patients was 34±17 years. Of 10 extracted teeth the bleeding duration in control group (simple sponge dressing) was 2.4±0.55 minutes and bleeding duration in the experimental side was 1.4±0.55 minutes. Bleeding duration in experimental group was 41% less than the control group, (p<0.01).
Conclusion
Sponge gauze soaked with 42◦ C saline decreases bleeding duration.
