Investigation of the incidence, risk factors and treatment methods in Basal cell carcinoma in patients referred to Loghman Hakim Hospital during a period of 7 years
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a non-invasive skin cancer, with exposure to ultraviolet radiation and changes in the PTCH gene as its important etiologies. Other risk factors include genetic, age, sex, skin color, sun exposure levels, occupations and other carcinogens.
In this study, patients with skin cancers managed in Loghman Hospital during a 7 year period were investigated regarding the type of tumor, relevant risk factors and type of treatment.
Out of 95 patients, 78.95% was male. Age range was 50 to 70 years. Head and neck were the most common sites of infection, most of the patients were farmers and resident in hot, dry weather. Prescribed treatment for most patients with BCC was surgical removal of the tumor.
Risk factors for BCC include age, gender, occupation, geographic region of residence, and most importantly exposure to sunlight.
