Knowledge, attitudes and practice of AIDS prevention among hospital servants of khorramabad

Background and Aim
Working in hospital and health services has different biological hazards such as transmison of blood born pathogens like AIDS. Servants as health care professionals are in contact with infectious remainders and sharp and cutting objects, so they face a grave risk of infection with the HIV virus in the course of their work. The aim of this study was to determine knowledge, attitud and practice toward AIDS prevention among hospital servants of Khoramabad in 2004.
Material And Methods
In this cross-sectional study 70 of the servants who were employed in Khorramabad’s educational hospitals were assessed. Subjects were selected through cencus method. The data were collected using questionnaire including age, sex, education, history of education about AIDS and staff knowledge, attitude and practice toward AIDS prevention variables. Information was collected by interview method. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and analytical tests such as T, ANOVA, Pearson and Spearman.
Results
None of the subjects had received education about HIV prevention in their work setting. 65.7% had good awareness, attitude in 51.4% was poor or weak, and practice in 72.9% was reported appropriate. 68.6% opposed that hospital servants are high risk to HIV infection. 42.9% didnt apply the safty precautions for aids prevention always and for all paients. 55.7% didn’t use disinfection materials for instruments and clothes in proper method. 54.3% during gathering hospital’s infectious remainders compacted them by hand or foot and 20% always didn’t use gloves.
Conclusion
Based on this study, hospital servants need to be trained about AIDS and its prophylaxis. Providing health and welfare of workers is not only a privilege but a duty for responsible human beings. In this regard health admistrators can have a very well influence in resolvig this problem by continuing education programs for hospital servants staff.
