Prevalence and predisposing factors for substance abuse among students

Drug addiction is a major problem in many communities which in addition to the physical problems cause psychological problems for the individual, family and community. Student population due to the high impact of peer and curiosity, a sense of independence and separation from family are in addiction danger. This study was done to determine the prevalence and attitudes to drug abuse among students of one courses in Boroujerd Azad university. This is a cross – sectional study. The instrument was a two part questionnaire consisted of 30 questions, in the first section, demographic information such as age, sex, birth place, marital status, housing status, income level and number of family members were assessed in the second part student's attitudes about drug addiction and alcohol abuse, the material and its underlying causes were examined. The questionnaire was distributed among 100 students and data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and chi-square test. 38% of participants had used at least once an addictive substance. 72% of their consumption reason was stated entertainment. 19% were smokers which 86% of them had a smoker in their family members and 52% spiritual stress and arousal friends were reported the cause of smoking. 36% reported smoking hookah which 77% of them reported being with friends and leisure was the agent. Tramadol and Ritalin consumption was reported in 8% which the reason in 50% was fun and arousal friends. According to the results, fun, stimulating friends and presence of a drug addiction member in the family increase risk of addiction students which parents paying attention more to this problem, increasing the awareness of students and also having plan for recreational activities for this population will due to decrease the tendency of students to be less addictive substance and unhealthy entertainment.
