Management Style of Military Hospitals and its Relationship with Hospital Performance Indicators

Aims
Leadership is the very factor playing a significant role in improving the efficiency of any organization. It is in fact the variable distinguishing a creative and innovative organization from other ones. The present study was an attempt to examine the management style in some selected military hospitals and its relationship with hospital performance indicators in 2011.
Method
This was a cross-sectional descriptive–analytical study. Seven hospitals were selected using stratified sampling from among the military hospitals in Tehran، Iran. The leadership style questionnaire with Likert scale was used for data collection. Data analysis was done using Mann-Whitney test، Chi square، and Spearman correlation coefficients using SPSS 19 software.
Results
Results showed that 56. 1، 22. 7، and 21. 2 percent of senior managers’ leadership styles were consultative، participative، and benevolent-authoritative respectively. There was no statistically significant relationship between leadership style and hospital performance indicators.
Conclusion
The results showed that approximately 10 to 15 percent of hospital beds are not being used، and in order to increase the efficiency of a hospital، managers need to move towards participative leadership styles.
