Evaluation of serum ferritin levels in patients with thalassemia major in Imam-Ali hospital in Zabol in 1390

Abstract:
Introduction
The most serious complications in beta-thalassemia are related to iron overload, which result of erythropoiesis and frequent blood transfusions. The aim of this study is to examine the efficacy of serum ferritin levels and desferrioxamine in bet- thalassemic patients.
Methods
In this cross-sectional study, 117 beta- thalassemic patients were participated. They aged between 4 and 21 years. All patients followed-up monthly to check for the trend of disease and blood transfusions. The patients were treated with deferoxamine with an average dose of 25-50 mg/kg/day. The serum ferretin was measured using ELISA method.
Results
The serum ferritin level was in a desirable range in all patients, which was between 300-2000 µg/L.
Conclusion
This study revealed that iron overload in thalassemic patients in Zabol was acceptable but with self-care teaching regarding deferoxamine adjustment the result may improve.
