A Comparative Study of Miraculous Deeds in Islam and Christianity

Message:
Abstract:
There have been references to miraculous deeds in the era after the messengers in Islam and Christianity. With regard to their existence and their functions, different views have been expressed but they have ben frequently considered as signs of divine credibility and legitimacy. Even if we attribute the same level of validity to these references in both Islam and Christianity, can they be considered as signs of divine approval? How can the same reason be taken as proof of two different and in some cases opposing beliefs? The present article first reviews the functions of miraculous deeds in Islam and Christianity paying attention to the kinds proofing acceptable to both religions. Then the principle of referring to common understanding is introduced as a comprehensive basis for dealing with miraculous deeds in Islam and Christianity. On the basis of the same principle, the function of each miraculous deed coincides with common understanding. Similarly, the function of the whole set of miraculous deeds which apparently seem contradictory can be studied by referring to the principle of common understanding. On this basis, the greatness of a miraculous deed is considered the criterion of excellence in rightfulness. Ultimately, the greatness of a miraculous deed will the criterion of supremacy and rightfulness of its possessor.
