Evaluation of Skid Resistance of Asphalt Pavement Containing Steel Slag
Author(s):
Abstract:
More than one million people die due to traffic accident annually which high percentages of this happen in Iran. Although the major cause of the accident is driver errors but road and specially the road surface plays an important role. Skid resistance of road surfaces is the primary factor which is defined as the force developed when a tire that is prevented from rotating slides along the pavement surface. The skid resistance of a pavement surface has been related to two main properties of the pavement, namely microtexture and macrotexture. On the other side, development of steel production in Iran is accompanied with steel slag that is stored and there is not any specific usage of it. Some positive physical characteristics of these products, including high specific gravity, angular shape, and rough surface texture have make these to be suitable aggregates for producing asphalt mixes and increasing its skid resistance. Therefore in this paper a comprehensive study of using steel slag in asphalt pavement and its influence on skid resistance of pavement surface has been investigated.
