Core Vocabulary Serving the First Grade Primary School Mathematics Textbook

Abstract:
In this paper the first grade primary school mathematics textbook in Iran (published in 1389/2011) was lexically examined. The 1390/2012 version of the book was also studied. The goal of this research was to identify the lexical structure of the book in order to be able to improve its language. To do this، all the nouns used in mathematical problems were extracted and their semantic domains were identified. The result was compared with Persian primary school vocabulary and the words used in first grade Persian textbook to present the proper words. The method was content analysis and the main theoretical framework of the study was Earle’s classification which categorizes the mathematical terms into general، technical and special. In conclusion، the lexical model of the book and a suggested lexical one were presented.
