Application of Metabolomics in Safety Evaluation of Genetically Modified Plants

Message:
Abstract:
One of the aspects of biotechnology is the production of transgenic plants for yield improvement, food security and food quality. Dِespite the many advantages of these productions in health and environment aspects, concerns are also expressed about their use. Since some of these concerns are not according to the scientific basis, biosafety evaluations of genetically modified plants could reduce it. Genetically modified plants can be compared with their traditional counterpart at metabolomics level. In this method, the metabolic profile of transgenic plants will be compared with their nontransgenic parents. Amino acids, fatty acids, mineral elements and anti nutrients that lead to disorder in biological pathways, such as gossypol, tannin and lectin are assessed in this method. This article is devoted to review the aspects of metabolic profiling assessment of transgenic plants.
