The Factor Structure and Psychometric Properties for Short form of the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S)

The aim of this study was factor structure and psychometric properties of Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S) in a sample of Iranian adults. Participants were 565 married students of Tehran universities who were selected by stratified random sampling method. They answered the Short form of Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S). 196 students among them also completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, Subjective Well- Being Questionnaire and Couple Relationship Quality Questionnaire. The confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency were used to compute the SELSA-S’s factorial validity and reliability. Factor analysis confirmed three factors SELSA-S. Values of the fitted parameters were in acceptable range. Significant correlations between SELSA-S and other measures indicated concurrent validity and discriminative. Cronbach's alpha results were for social loneliness 0/66, family loneliness 0/75, romantic loneliness 0/73 and total 0/77 respectively. The results confirmed three-factor structure of the scale SELSA-S and also showed good reliability and validity of this scale for assessment of social and emotional loneliness.
