Comparison of data elements in ECIP cords with data elements in the copyri pages of CIP records for monographs cataloged between 2008 and 2011 at th National Library of Iran NLI

Investigating consistency of data elements of ECIP)Electronic Cataloging in Publication (records in the bibliographic database of the National Library with the printed CIP data elements printd on the copyright pages of monographs held in the collection of the library wa sth epurpose of this study. The number of fake ECIP titles and mistakes by publishers in the print format was also studied. Design/Methodology/Approach: Bibliographic elements) heading، title، publication sta - tus، physical characteristics، subject، classification، added entries (were collected from NLI''s database and copyright pages of printed monographs for a sample of 1000 titles divided into 10 DDC main classes. Consistency for descriptive data elements was100% the main entry، Philosophy and Arts classes. Consistency was observed for 99% for Titles and 90% publication satatus for all items disregard of th subject area. With regard to analytic elements، consistency was 100% with regard to classification code for the classes of Generalities and Philosophy f. Subject headings with 98. 2% consistency of Theology and Literature; and added entries with 70% for generalitie. Overall، consistency rates were higher in main entry and title، and lower for added entries. More than 70% of the printed CIP data in copyright pages of printed mon- ogrphs was consistent ECIP records. Consistency of descriptive data in printed CIP was less than analytic data. Typing errors found in 49. 5% of records in printed materials. Out of 1219 records randomly selected، 219 were fake ECIP، ie relevant items were never not published.
