Content Analysis of the 3rd-Grade Guidance School Stu-dent's Text Books in Regard to Emotional Intelligence

Message:
Abstract:
This study was conducted to investigate the degree to which the components of emotional intelligence were considered in 3rd-grade guidance school student's textbooks. The method of this quantitative research was content analysis. The population consisted of all textbooks taught to 3rd-grade guidance school students in 2009-2010 school-year. In the content analysis process, codification was made deductively according to the five components of emotional intelligence. In order to ensure the validation of codification process, a second referee was used, too. In the study, context unit consisted of lessons and those of recording included content, illustrations, and exercises. The rate of agreements between two referees was 0.81. The findings showed that in the studied textbooks, little consideration has been given to the components of emotional intelligence and even ignored in some of the textbooks. It can be concluded that curriculum designers and educational field experts must take into account developing of emotional intelligence with all its components in students through the textbooks they provide.
