Migration of JabalĀmilyānto Safavid Iran: Myth or Reality

Author(s):
Abstract:
JabalĀmil’sscholars had a significant role in strengthening the foundations of the Safavidstate legitimacy, promoting the religious rituals, and tracking the Safavid religious policy. One of the most prominent scholars who migrated from Lebanon was scholar Kurki Who is known as the promoter of Shia in 10th century (AH). Andrew Newman, the contemporary historian, in his article points out some reasons to claim that the immigration of JabalĀmel's scholars to Iran is just a myth. In the following paper, the author tries to criticize Newman's claims by translating the main part of his article. He explains in details different parts of Newman's article which discusses the topics such as: rejection of the Shia Safavid, protest against scholar Kurki, the conflict between non-Iranian Shia and Safavid Shia, JabalĀmiliān’s answer to Safavid Shia, the era of Shah Tahmasb I, and… The results of the author's research show that Newman's arguments are solely based on weak reasoning such as: the difference between the Shia scholars’ religious practices and Safavid Shia’s ones, Āmiliān’s lack of interest in political participation, and scholars’ dissatisfaction with linking the politics and religion. Consequently, Newman’s article lacks enough documents.
