The Influence of Cognitive Factors on the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes in Yazd

Diabetes refers to complex chronic metabolic conditions that are characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose if untreated. Diabetes is one of the biggest health care problems facing Yazd with regard to prevalence, cost, and the onus it placed on patients and its high morbidity rates. Patient's self-care behaviours have a major role in diabetes management. Such self-care activities can be exceedingly demanding and often require fundamental lifestyle changes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among cognitive factors on the control and treatment of type 2 diabetes. The statistical society of study was 4990 referent diabetic patients to Yazd Diabetes Research Center. A sum of 256 were selected by simple random sampling method through statistical society. This study was based on survey method and the instrument of collecting data has been questionnaires. One-way ANOVA, t-test, Pearson correlation and regression were analyzed for the study. Significant correlations were found between self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, severity and adherence to self-care activities but significant correlation was not found between interference and adherence to self-care activities. Adherence to self-care activities was greater among older, more-educated and upper-income patients. Also, a total of 27% of variance in self-care behavior can be explained by duration of diabetes and self-efficacy.
