Gender beliefs Related to math in Minds of students

Abstract:
The aim of the present study is Evaluation of student's beliefs about gender roles in Mathematics and their view on the types of mathematical fields (masculine, feminine, and neutral). For this purpose, Mathematics Educational Belief Scale (MEBS) completed by 400 high school students (200 girls and 200 boys) in Jiroft (a city in the Sought of Kerman Province) who were selected by using cluster sampling method. For the data analysis that collected via MEBS, Mann-Whitney, chi-square, t single group and t test fot two independent groups were used. The results suggest that from these students’ perspective, mathematics is a male domain, and there are gender differences in student's responses. According to the findings of the current study, we suggest that mathematics teachers and mathematics educators could intervene to female students’ beliefs about mathematics as a male – dominated discipline.
