Phenomenological Study of Mothers Experiences Regarding Satellite TV's Impacts on Adolescents

Mass Media, satellite TV channels in particular, play a significant role in promoting individuals lifestyles, particularly those of adolescents. The present research aims to study mothers’ experiences with regard to the impacts of exposure to satellite TV on adolescents. Adopting a phenomenological approach and purposeful sampling, this qualitative research was carried out through semi-structured interviews. The recorded interviews were first transcribed and then analyzed using Smith’s proposed model (1995). The findings reveal five main themes, i.e. “satellite users motivation”, “positive functions”, “negative functions”, “change in lifestyle” and “proposed solutions”, and several peripheral themes. The findings could provide a clear picture of mothers’ experiences regarding the impacts of satellite TV on adolescents.
