An Analysis of Mofakhereh in Shahryar's Poetry

Abstract:
Mofakhereh and Narcissism are the two supposedly similar terms that are really different from each other. The former is related to literature and the latter is kind of mental disorder (neurosis) that is fallen in the realm of psychology. These two terms are often used interchangeably whereas their different aspects are mostly ignored. Inherent in the text and context of Shahryar ’s ouvre, one can find various subjects and themes, among which is the high frequency of different Mofakherehs. Diversity, beauty and strength of these Mofakherehs are so wide that makes the reader wonder whether Shahryar’s flattery (swagger) is due to his inferiority complex and his selfishness, or has he used them as a literary device. In this research it has been attempted to survey Shahryar’s Persian and Turkish poems and use the inductive method to analyze the concepts of Mofakhereh and Narcissism which are directly related to the conditions and aspects of the poet’s life. The findings of this research indicate that Shahryar has overtaken other poets in using Mofakhereh, which is a literary subcategory or surface structure. However, most researchers have put Khaghani’s Mofakherehs at the top of the Persian poetry. Additionally, there is no evidence about the self-flattery (swagger) in Shahryar’s life and works.
