The Investigation of the Effects of Vibration Training (WBV) on Body Composition in Athlete and Non-Athlete Female University Students

Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate the effect of vibration training (WBV) on body composition of athlete and non-athlete female students of University of Tehran. For this purpose, 40 volunteers were assigned to athlete group (n=10) and non-athlete group (n=20) with mean age 21.62+1.53 yr, height 165.33+5.54 cm, weight 59.36+5.55 kg and BMI 21.33+1.42 kg/m2. Each athlete and non-athlete groups were randomly divided into control group (n=10) and experimental group (n=10). The WBV program continued 3 weeks and 3 sessions per week; the sessions started from five 1-min. sets (1 min. WBV and 1 min. rest) and increased up to 8 sets. The intensity was set on 40 Hz frequency and 10 mm range. BMI, BF% and LBM were examined before and after 3 weeks of WBV. The collected data were analyzed by ANOVA, dependent and independent t tests. The results showed that 3 weeks of WBV significantly increased non-athlete's LBM (p=0.03) while no significant changes were observed in BF% and BMI of both groups. No noticeable changes were observed in all studied variables in athlete and non-athlete control groups. Consequently, the findings showed that vibration training for three weeks could not noticeably influence the anthropometric variables in athlete and non-athlete girls.
