Word Order Typology in Azerbaijani

The present paper modeled on Dabir-Moghaddam (1392) describes word order in standard Azerbaijani in the framework of Dryer (1992). The results of the description indicate that compared with both the languages in its own geographical area (i.e. EurAsia) and those of the world, Azerbaijani predominantly enjoys the criteria of the strong verb-final (OV) languages. Compared with the languages of EurAsia, Azerbaijani has 22 criteria relevant to strong verb-final languages and 14 ones relevant to strong verb-medial (VO) languages. In comparison with the languages of the world, Azerbaijani has 18 criteria relevant to strong verb-final languages and 12 ones relevant to strong verb-medial languages.
