The influence of citizenship education on empowering women, 6th district of Tehran municipality

Tehran municipality has been teaching citizenship based on neighborhood- oriented approach in order to empower women. In spite of the large span and high costs of the plan, unified researches havent been done in this field. Thus, the present paper primarily aimed to study the relationship between provided instructions and the level of women's empowerment. The method of the study was survey. The statistical population of the study covered women living in Jihad neighborhood, the 6th district of Tehran municipality (N=7000). The sample of the study included 384 women who were selected through quota sampling. Out of the total number of women in the sample, 192 are educated. Data were gathered through questionnaires with high alpha coefficient. Results of independent T test showed that there is a significant difference between the two groups of educated and uneducated women in terms of women's participation, women's awareness of health issues, citizenship rights, duties, and their life skills. According to the results, educated women possess more favorable conditions. However, there was no relationship between these two groups in terms of their awareness of the health and social ills after providing instructions. Teaching citizenship improved the empowerment of women so that educated and uneducated women had different levels of empowerment. This finding suggests that citizenship education plan was effective.
