Risk Management Assessment at the Museums of the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts, and Tourism Organization

Aims to report the state of risk management at the museums of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization A questionnaire was used to gather data. Research population consisted of 80 managers and staff members of museums throughout the country. Reliability index of the questionnaire was 85%. Metal objects are the most common objects held at the museums, more than other materials (56.66%). The age of 80% of museum buildings was more than 30 years, and 60% of buildings are listed as national heritage; 91.7% of the buildings lack an insurance policy; all are located in the zones prone to natural disasters and other kinds of risk; 71.7% lack witten risk control plans and continous training programs. Lack of insurance policies for buildings and museum collections, lack of risk control plans, and lack of budget are among the problems that museums face with regard to managing risks. The process of risk management in the museums is not appropriate. We recommend that a national committee for identifying risk be established. The committee should carry out a feasibility study to implement a risk management process. A task force should appointed to work out problems regarding insurance and membership in national and regional networks.
