Manufacturing and application of new combinations for coating of paper and paperboard in packaging

This paper demonstrates consumption capability for wood-based xylan derivatives; nano fibrillated celloluse, mineral pigments & its nano particles and biodegrable polymers to be used in coating paper applications. Extraction and purification of pure xylan from bleached kraft pulp, preparation of nano fibers from woods, minerals pigments and new biopolymers such as poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polylactic acid (PLA) are described as a part of the production of coating suspensions. Also afficient derivatization as water soluble derivatives were achieved and promising results were obtained in primary application tests as a coating component in barrier coatings on board and as a binder component in pigments of coating. With the best suspensions coating, the barrier properties were better than with a commercial polymer coating, while oxygen permeability was roughly one third of that for a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) coating. Likewise, optical properties, printability and mechanical resistances have compared to the references coatings and commercial paperboards. In many cases, the mechanical properties such as resistance agains folding, tensile, burst and tear are improved.
