A Study of the Political Stances of the 19th and the 20th Parliaments of the National Assembly on the Iran-US Relations

Abstract:
The history of Iran-US relations dates back to the nineteenth century and the year 188, however, following the Second World War and the crisis of the Soviet invasion of Iran, the presence of the US in the foreign policy of Iran became stronger; a presence that led to the US intervention in Iran’s affairs and the overthrow of the legitimate government of Dr. Mohammad Mosaddegh. The downfall of Mosaddegh paved the way for a stronger presence of the US in the Iran’s policy through the setup of the SAVAK (Organization of the National Security and Intelligence) apparatus. Further, the forty percent share of the US in the oil consortium strengthened the role of the US in the economy of Iran. The main question of the present study is: What stances did the nineteenth and the twentieth parliaments take to extend the Iran-US relations? The core hypothesis is that these parliaments approved of the foreign policy of the Shah due to the unpopularity of both parliaments and due to the presence of Shah-related elements. The study will be carried out through a documentary method in which the subject of the research will be analyzed by resorting to the library resources and the detailed accounts of the parliamentary negotiations.
