Evaluation of English Abstracts of PhD Dissertations in Knowledge and Information Science based on Linguistic Perspective

Abstract:
Purpose
To compare and evaluate English and Persian abstracts of PhD dissertations in Knowledge and Information Science (KIS) regarding English sentence structure.
Methodology
This is an applied research using survey method. The evaluation is adopted from Bacha-Jacob's ESL Composition Profile, which includes five categories: content, organization, language use, vocabulary and mechanics. Forty-nine PhD dissertation abstracts in KIS from three Iranian universities were selected and data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results
The highest match between Persian and English abstracts was seen in two components of content (98.73%) and organization (95.58%). Following English regulations in abstracts were mostly seen in three categories of vocabulary (93.6%), language use (91.32%) and mechanics (85%). English abstracts were written in an excellent way.
Conclusion
The perfect match between Persian and English abstracts should be considered to convey the same message. Also, there is a strong connection between linguistic components, which needs to be accounted when writing a qualified piece.
