Concepts Related to Knowledge and Information Science in Elementary School Textbooks

Abstract:
Purpose
To survey the existence of concepts related to knowledge and information science in elementary school textbooks.
Methodology
An applied research using quantitative content analysis. The population consists of 44 textbooks of all six grades of elementary school. Data collected using a self-designed checklist and fell into 11 categories.
Results
194 concepts were used in textbooks which sixth grade stands in the first place with 30.5% followed by fifth grade with 18.9% and second grade with 16.3%. Among textbooks, "Quran" with 2466 cases is in the first place, followed by "Farsi" and "Social Science" with 1563 and 730 cases respectively. Considering subjects, "library materials", "studying and reading" and "printing and publishing" are first to third with 63.8%, 12.5% and 8.8%.
Conclusion
There exists no written policy for writing about Knowledge and Information Science concepts in school textbooks even no balance in writing about concepts in different grades or textbooks. Also, information technology has been less considered which needs to be revised due to recent advances.
