The Assessment of health, safety and environment Status in training laboratories

Any laboratory has risks that might be a threat to its staff, students and personnel. The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) system can play a major role in reducing lab accidents; therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate health, safety and environment in Laboratory of an University of Medical Sciences in Iran. In this cross-sectional study the standards for health, safety and environment standards have been extracted in the lab and by designing comprehensive checklist (HSE) with inspection and interviews census a university of medical science laboratories in Iran, the data obtained by descriptive statistics were analysed using Excel and SPSS software,. Cut of point 50% in this study due to considered current conditions laboratories and advice members of research team. Partially The best conditions showed in laboratory (12) (%51.8) department of Health and Medicine and the worst conditions in Immunology Laboratory (%24.4), department of Basic Medical Sciences. The Health, Safety, and Environment score, were %52.9 %41.0 %37.3, respectively. The Minimum of score related to the fire safety score was (%30.0) and the Maximum of that related to ergonomics score was (%78.9) and only department of Health and Medicine (%50.2) received an acceptable score. Score of HSE laboratories of the University of Medical Sciences was %43.7. the HSE in laboratories of foregoing Medical University was unacceptable. So it is advisable to be institutionalized safety culture in laboratories and will be considered HSE training units for new students. Also recommended to researchers that Perform more research in this field.
