The Relationship between Participation in Institutional Social Networks and the Experience of Aloneness in Tehran

Abstract:
This article aims to explore the relationship between participation in institutional social networks and the experience of aloneness. The results of this study are based on a survey including 524 respondents in Tehran. The preliminary results of this study show that 58 per cent of respondents have participated in institutional social networks, 47 per cent have received social support, and 50.6 per cent of them have experienced a sense of aloneness. Furthermore, the multivariate results of this analysis show two key patterns: on the one hand, participation in institutional social networks and the experience of aloneness are significantly correlated (0.180). On the other hand, the experience of aloneness is negatively affected both by participation in institutional social networks (- 0.240) and by received social support (- 0.552).
