Mosul Through History

Abstract:
Mosul’s special geographic position, being on the path of important trade routes, the arable soil of Mesopotamia, and the abundance of oil wells have added to the importance of this city. Mosul is also the capital of Nineveh province in Iraq and the history of its name is debated, however the city was mostly inhabited by Shi’a’s before Saddam’s project to make it a Sunni city.
The founding of Mosul, Iraq’s third biggest metropolis and the capital of the Iraqi oil wells goes back to the Pishdadian Era, where it was the capital of the Ashur government. Many historians, geographers, and explorers have written their experience of visiting this city.
Mosul was the Romans’ only way to infiltrate Iraq and Levant, hence Muslims focused on liberating this city and Amir al-Mu’minin (a) installed experienced and powerful governors in this city during his caliphate. Because of its strategic position, Mosul has seen many conflicts between various powers, and has thus experienced many ups and downs throughout its history.
This article provides valuable information on the religious, strategic, geographical, historical, social, economic, and culture of Mosul to its reader and also brings the itineraries of historians, explorers, and geographers of this city.
